I was just perusing their board, and saw a thread in which a poster mentioned wanting to play zone. One of the people responded by saying:

"When was the last time a zone playing team won a natty?

...still waiting..."

Now first of all, we won in 2003 (which another poster mentioned)...but they do realize that Louisville won last year playing an awful lot of match up zone, right? So...I guess the correct answer for that poster would be...the defending national champs?

Not to mention the current #2 team in the nation, which, oh yeah, was also in the Final Four last season?

People have such a misconception of what a good zone can be. They are all like certain posters here who think it's "tavern league" and lazy. Drives me nuts.

During the Jimmer years BYU played zone so they could let him rest on defense. They had a Rautins like guard named Jackson Emery that basically was tasked to cover from the three point line to halfcourt. The defense was a joke.

Anyway, I think most people think that's what a zone defense is. It frustrates the crap out of me when I play pickup and we go zone. I've watched so much Boeheim ball over the years I've got the rotations in my blood. I get yelled at by the mouth breathers for being out of position because I either a) don't stay glued to one section on the floor like everyone else or b) don't immediately face guard anybody that enters my part of the zone. It's maddening. That's why I always play in Cuse gear. If one of the "player coaches" tells me I'm out of position, I point to the big S on my shirt.

I get to see a lot of UNC here in Raleigh. They are going to jack a lot of threes on Saturday. It should play to our advantage. They live and die by it.

I think they are going to have fitsssss shooting, Paige is their best shooter, but he is going to have to shoot over our zone I think that will be a problem, and if they want to have a chance j Mac needs to have a big game, which I don't think will happen.
On paper I really like out chances. Outside of Paige the next best shooter is Leslie M and he needs to hit them too.

I'll take Cuse 75
Heels 67

If anyone besides Leslie and Paige want to shoot 3's, have at it.

If one of our guys is thinking for one freakin’ second about Syracuse, then I’ll say you’re the dumbest guy that’s ever lived. - Roy Williams

Really you have seen them a lot? They rank 350 out 351 in 3 point attempts. I do hope we see them shoot a lot of them though.

Looking forward to teaching them what a well played zone looks like. School is in session this Saturday fellas.

i agree with your score, but i think the main weakness of our zone this year is perimeter defense. i think our rebounding is better than usual, but we have taken a step back w ennis and cooney v mcw and triche. i also think grant struggles with positioning and defending the arc. roberson is new so he has similar struggles. i think rak and keita have been great.

That's exactly where I think the spread will be.

They've beaten some good teams this year, but whenever Roy beats a good coach (in fairness, it happens a lot) I always kind of feel like something fluky happened.

I hate when people talk about how JB has been a zone coach for his entire career.

It's even worse when it's said by syracuse fans and by people who are actually paid to know basketball.

Just think about how much extra satisfaction you derive when we whip UNC this weekend, and make that clown eat his words.

Rebounding will be big in this game. Keeping Johnson, Meeks and McAdoo off the offensive glass is huge.

Yeah rebounding is key, UNC is excellent on the glass.

I think the Wake game was an anomaly; UNC had a 53-34 rebounding advantage and somehow lost. They're usually very good at getting to the line, yet they attempted 11 FTs compared to 33 for Wake. UNC just couldn't hit anything from anywhere on the floor, which is strange because usually a team with 24 offensive rebounds would get some high percentage looks.

Same thing happened to me in an intramural game. Our team needed one player so we picked up a random and were getting our butts kicked so we switched to a 2-3 zone. Kid got mad at me for being out of position. He was also a ballhog.

you should schedule a mandatory film session for your crew

I read that thread and I love how people post things as facts that are completely wrong. Oh well.

nice try on that board, doc, but it just reinforces the old saw "there are none so blind as those who will not see"

I'm not going to get into a pissing match when it's obvious what I'm dealing with.

I've only been a fan few a few decades, but that UNC fan went to a clinic once so I'm obviously wrong.
