Off season camping in NY

Anyone know of good tent camping spots in the off season? Almost all the DEC campgrounds are closed for the season, and the rest are to capacity on weekends. Does NJ/CT/MA or Vermont have some good spots after Columbus day?

Redfield reservoir up by Camden has open camping, not a camp ground but there are places to camp there.
