The 3pt shooting simply has to get better. Seems unlikely it won’t, but Kingz has to get going. We need him badly.

The free throw shooting specifically from JJ and Kyle is a major, major problem. I mean… we are witnessing some of the worst attempts you’ll ever see. Air balls that are not even close. It’s beyond belief, not exaggerating.

The offensive sets get way too stagnant. We seem to be trying to spread the floor but it’s leading to too much 1v1 and the point is to get the ball to shooters when you do that, but we aren’t consistently making them off these sets.

Halfcourt offense has to be a hell of a lot better and I think we need to score much more in transition which should be there with our defensive intensity.

I’m not an Xs and Os guy, and I really respect those who can explain the game.

Soooo, could someone who knows what they’re looking at explain our offense? What are we trying to do? Whats working? What’s not?

I saw what appeared to be a lot of “open” looks today from 3 that we bricked.

I also saw what appeared to be a ton of highly contested heaves towards the rim from mid range and closer.

Are we a terrible shooting team because our guys are just missing? Or are we a terrible shooting team because we’re not creating better looks?

I’m not even going to touch free throws.

Shot selection is atrocious. Every time we had a chance to tie the game we threw up some garbage shot and gave up a layup on the other end.

All game it was long three for us leading to transition layups. That was the game. We took low percentage shots.

Kings and Kiyan have to step up from three. JJ has to work off two feet getting in the lane and then finding guys. He’s shooting too many wild runners. George was very poor today.
Kiyan is a kid. He played horribly so far in Vegas. Kingz was brought here to hit 3’s as an established veteran. He has not.

This isn't necessarily directed at you - this has always been what Syracuse's offense is. Jim was never a huge draw up plays and X&O people to death. It's always been a free flowing offense that relies on Iso's and 2 on 2 P&R. However, (Sans 2016-Now) Syracuse recruited guys for that style. Guards who could create their own shot and get by defenders off the dribble, and big long wings that run the floor and are athletic off the bounce, playing above the rim.

You can't run a free flowing P&R offense with slow unathletic players, who can't create their own shot or get by anybody - it's simply not going to work.

  1. George has to step up. He should have taken the end of regulation shot vs Houston instead of passing to Kyle.
  2. Kyle can't be on the floor the last 5 minutes. Hopefully Donnie comes back and takes this late game role.
  3. George 1-4 and JJ 3-13 is what I feared. Better players are deferring to JJ because of his experience and that he has been anointed a team leader.
  4. Other than JJ and Kyle the rest of the team shot 77% from the line. Let's not over focus on the overall stat and get the guys that can't make them out in critical situations.

I'll take a stab at this tomorrow.

Right now, I have a headache from watching all of those bricks.

I agree with some of this but not all. Kyle has to be on the floor for defense and rebounding.

White put up some terrible shots. Anthony put up terrible shots. Same with Betsy. I think it’s an issue across the board and less about certain guys. We simply take bad shots.

You're saying that Autry made significant changes to our defensive scheme, but largely kept Boeheim's offense intact?

We have athletes. The problem is the guy who takes the most shots is our most inefficient player(JJ).

You guys are looking for X’s and O’s and coaching solutions but there were some just some bigger things at play.

The free throw shooting is mental and the shot selection and missed shots tonight were just our shooters didn’t have their legs and it showed in our decisions and settling for too many 3’s.

They’re giving it all on the defensive end. Realistically we may wake up with one of the best D’s in the country next week.

You can say all you want that they should be conditioned and whatever else but we know Kansas got to play cupcake city ND yesterday and had a longer turnaround and we went extra time against Houston with no Donnie.

Kansas got to watch us play Houston yesterday and gameplan everything we did last night while we got back to the hotel at like 10 or 11. They schemed us well and took our bread and butter away.

Sometimes it’s just that simple. I agree we have offensive issues but sometimes the root cause is just a team having their legs and a better gameplan due to the turnaround and the other team not.

We see this plenty in ACC play with the Saturday /Monday games. Today we got about 4 hours less rest than Kansas and we had Houston.

Oh goodness, talk about excuses

We can't beat people off the dribble (especially George and Kiyan), which means we don't pressure the defense enough. That said, we got looks but missed and then had too many bad shots and we aren't good enough to overcome that.

Too much 1 pass and launch
Too much no pass and launch
Too much iso and launch

We have no discipline on offense.
We have no teamwork on offense.
Even with Freeman, we don't work the post/mid-post enough
Players think once they get the ball, they have to shot (White and Anthony do this alot for example)

X and O's is vanilla just high pick and roll or mid post iso same stuff we have been running for decades.

I get the point you're making, but I don't entirely buy it.

It's not like we've been sharpshooters from 3 prior to this game.

4-21 (19%)
8-21 (38%)
7-19 (37%)
7-17 (41%)
8-31 (26%)
7-30 (23%)

41-139 (29%)

We were only shooting 33% before we got to Vegas.

29% means we're ranking around 300th in college ball. 33% would be around 190th.

I think it's more likely that we've just been a horrific shooting team, and the lack of rest today didn't help. I don't think that's the cause.

When we're not scoring, players naturally start to hunt shots to try to get the team going. It's their competitive nature.

What they really need to do when shots are not falling is run more back picks, more movement through the lane by the guys without the ball, to make the defense move and react. That 's what creates open shooters.

Anthony or Betsy standing out by the logo with nobody guarding them gets the first pass of the possession and just launches a three 5 seconds into the shot clock is a terrible terrible terrible possession even if they are "open" that happened at least 5 times I can remember without even watching tape back.
