Jake made a comment elsewhere about how the OL is trending up.

On deck?
Zach Rice 6/5 305 So
Orion Irving 6/6 310 Jr

Even if nobody else joins I would hope they can find a mid-tier ACC OL
15 are 6-5 or better, and 15 are 300 lbs or better. 4 freshman 6-7 292, 6-5 295, 6-6 270, 6-7 270 all 4 have the size to add good weight to be 310 or better.

Irving is probably going to Vanderbilt. I think we see a Rice commitment this week.

Honest question -- not knocking the analysis. Is there any expectation that Brown-Miller is somehow going to crack the two-deep? Maybe I missed something, I just didn't expect him to see the field.

Just to put things in perspective how far we've come...

...back in the Dino era I remember watching an away game on TV. We were on offense, and my wife--who is only very mildly interest in football--said "How come their guys look so much bigger?"
A family member went down to Tallahassee for one of the beatdowns we took at FSU. I think it was the game where our DB got hurt (forget who). Anyway, he was down on field level and sent me a photo of what our players and their players looked like next to each other. I was horrified.

He was on the second line in the spring game. He might be at the back of the line and get bumped down, but certainly has the size and the benefit of being in the program.

How does this size compare to other ACC teams?

How does this size compare to other ACC teams?

Favorably. Outside of a few true frosh [who will be just at the beginning of their physical maturity curve when they arrive this summer], everyone else is ~300 pounds.

A couple of those guys are mammoths who are even an increment bigger / larger than that.

The question is: can some of those guys actually PLAY. The sure look the part getting off of the bus.

2023 vs 2024
LT: Spoon/Wohlabaugh LT: Mack/Pringle
LG: Bradford/Hornsby LG: Cruz/Rice
C: Reed/Illoa C: Austin Collins
RG: Petry/Cruz RG: Petry/Miller
RT: Washington/Cruz RT: Spoon/Bertrand

Did the line get better?

I wish we still had the General at Center as then I would stack this OL against any in the ACC.
Yeah Center still has me concerned. Getting all the new players aligned and in lockstep will take some time. A few unknowns with existing players. That group has allot to prove before I get to bullish BUT there is good talent in these guys. Coaching and team building will be critical. Would love to know if the oline group is mostlty staying in Syracuse over the summer. Get them all lifting and hanging out together.

I think it was Julian Whigham. Jimbo Fisher went to see him in the hospital. Think what you want about Jimbo but that was class on his part.

We’re gonna get a bunch of nonsense about all of them playing all the positions for most of summer/fall and then Dale will randomly just say the 5 in his last media availability. Spoon Perry are the locks I think, maybe Collins.

Yes. It was the Whigham game. Thanks for the assist!

I was just blown away by the size difference between the FSU linemen and our linemen. It was clear why we were not competing in the trenches with the big boys back then.

Should we be worried that the OL is going to be completely new two weeks before the season? The coaches have little time to evaluate where people should play. The players have little time to gel. OL is a unit while every other player is in a position.

These guys will be showing up probably mid to late May. They will begin working out together and practicing together but without the coaches. Not sure if consultants and grad students can work with them during this time. Camp will add pads but they will have three months together before the season.

Actually, the time to worry was probably a few weeks back before we got these new guys. The coaches probably wouldn't be bringing in four guys if they liked what they saw.

Yeah this. These guys will get some time to work together.

FWIW, I did track and not football, but NCAA allows for "Captain's Practices." The veterans on the team already knew how to lead all the regular drills, had all the contact info, and would organize the time and places. We weren't allowed any staff members or coaches to be there but IIRC there were grad students. They weren't mandatory in the traditional sense, but everybody would know if and when somebody didn't show up.

Even when campus was closed, people in dorms would come and crash at the off campus rentals of upperclassman, and we'd have big "spaghetti" or "pizza" or "chicken and rice" type of dinners. Talking about it, I really miss those days...the competition gets all the credit but there's a million great moments that lead up to it.

edit: Ah, more coming back to me lol. We'd play pickup football too. The throwers were the lines, the sprinters the receivers and DBs, and decathletes the running backs and LBs.
