Below is the average attendance for home games from the 1977-78 season through the 2021-22 season. The 2020-21 season has been omitted due to the pandemic. The source is ncaa.org.
  • Average attendance went up 84% (8,914 to 16,440) with the move to the current facility for the 1980-81 season, also the first season in the Big East.
  • The season of highest average attendance belongs to 1989-90 with 478,686 over 16 games for an average of 29,918.
  • The first season in the ACC, 2013-14, marks a more recent high point, with a total attendance of 472,550 over 18 games, an average of 26,253.

Mid 80s to early 90s was Glory yrs

An exciting hire as the next coach could push the attendance level back to the 25k+ level it they are able to return the team to a Top 10 level again.

Less games on TV. Had to be there to watch some games.
Yep, plus
  • more Saturday night games, since they weren't all day for the regional networks like they are now. The weekend afternoon games were usually big CBS games against a top 10 team so you didn't care what time the game was.
  • Players stayed around longer. Even the not-so-good teams had players you were familiar with, and our guys were household names.
  • Big East was 9 northeast teams, for more familiarity, and in any of those years 5 of them were top 25.
  • No online secondary ticket market, or online anything for that matter. If you knew someone who had tickets you went, because you never knew when you'd get another chance.

I go when im offered tickets these days for basketball

Some great points.

Plus there was no such thing as a 65 inch Hi Def TV which truly is the best seat in the house. I personally enjoy going to the games, but it's easy to see why attendance has dropped. And, it has has a lot of other schools as well. But being #1 and over 20,000 is a lot to be proud of.

I predict this will be the last season that more than 25,000 basketball seats will exist on a game-to-game basis.
