Leavitt was a horrible coach, good recruiter, lousy coach.

I'm not sure I agree with that. I thought he was very solid at USF until he started hitting players, particularly starting the program from the ground up.

He brought in a lot of talent, like I said good recruiter, I thought he underachieved with the talent he had in the Big East.

Would be my top 2 guesses.
When Clay Helton is the coach at USC it shows how weak good college coaching depth truly is.
Helton isn’t a great coach and he has an elite job.
