Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the best picture films yet, I usually don't see stuff until it is available on Netflix. I'm sure I'll see them all, except for Beasts of the Southern Wild and Life of Pi. I am glad Moonrise Kingdom got a screen play nomination.

I haven't seen Argo yet, but from what I understand, it's a travesty that Affleck didn't receive a directing nod. And it's also ridiculous John Hawkes wasn't nominated for The Sessions, from what I've also read.

Agreed. I was surprised at how much I liked Argo. A film has to be wonderfully directed, when the story line (and outcome) is popularly known. I knew how the story ended, and I was still tense and watching on the edge of my seat.

All I have heard is great things about The Sessions. Haven't seen it yet, though.

Regarding Affleck, Wesley Morris at Grantland put it pretty well: he's "made directing look too easy for himself." In other words, he's just got a great, natural style and all of his movies are slick and good looking and he gets great performances every time out, and they're generally commercial successes, and when you hold the style of his films up against stuff like Life of Pi, well, it's vastly different, so the voters go with what's different rather than what's just plain good, if, well, plain.

I haven't seen Argo either, but heard it is very, very good.

Can't stand it when movies get nominated before they've even been released.

Zero Dark Thirty had a limited release (60 theaters) on December 19 so yes, technically it was released before today. It only went wide today.

Zero Dark Thirty came out today. The nominations were not today.
It only opened today for you hicks out in East Podunk
