OT: Best of luck to our Alaskan posters

???

Just looked it up. Wasn't even aware that happened. 7.0 earthquake

OK here in Juneau but the Anchorage highway infrastructure is a wreck. Can't even begin to think about how costly repairs will be plus the building season is limited. It will be hard times for most of the State. The Anchorage Airport is closed and the highways are impassable. It is a major airport for freight coming from Asia. Looking at the tarmac is a trip - all these 747 air freighters with Asian names.

The quake was very deep and that lessened the impact. Most Anchorage buildings meet earthquake code, roads not so much. It hit on the North side of Cook Inlet roughly across from Palmer and Wasilla and Elmendorf Air Force Base. They must have built the base before they knew about faults. I think that about 1/2 the Nation's anti- missile defense system is there. Wonder if it is now out of action? Fortunately, the population is on the south side of Cook Inlet. The North side is the likely place for future development but it would require construction of a big bridge. The State built a $78 million dollar ice breaker/ferry that ended up being sold (ebay?), (to the Philippians?) to connect the south and north sides of Cook Inlet. $78M Alaska Ferry to Nowhere Must Go

The topography of the fault line is that it is offshore of SE Alaska but it cuts across Anchorage and then runs NW right through Denali National Park. It is respsonsible for Mt McKinley. The Mtn has the highest vertical from foot to top of any mountain in the world, not counting Hawaii.

People ask what is it with alaska wanting ferries and bridges to nowhere? Think pioneer days. Population expanding and no infrastructure. The transportation system is undeveloped. Therefore, available land is limited. Lots of public land, private not so much. Residential lots probably go from 150k to 250k, not counting preparation.

Here are some photos of the roads and such. I'm sure many of us never thought of the $$$$ to repair all of the damaged roads.
Back-to-back earthquakes shatter roads and windows in Alaska

Some internet quake forecasters say it's possible that was a fore-shock to an even bigger quake.

Well shaken not stirred today in Anchorage. I was at work when it hit and had a cup of coffee that sprayed 3/4 down a board room sized table. Ceiling tiles dropping.
Anything not firmly secured got tossed and broken. House shook so hard the cabinets and drawers were open. House moved so much water from toilet tank sloshed over slightly.
Lots of broken glass but no major damage.
It was a shallow initial quick burst quake that lasted around 45-50 seconds. Aftershocks have been multiple but not as intense. Hopefully calming.
