I've never really been a betting type of guy, but on-line betting is now legal in Ontario so I thought I might play a little with a few bucks now and then. I understand the odds for basketball games such as "-5" or "+6". I'm watching a lot of NHL playoff games as usual and see "Draft Kings" put up some weird odds during the broadcast which I don't understand. For example, a certain game may have Boston at +160 and Carolina at -140. What the heck do those mean? I haven't signed up for anything yet and am not sure how the odds will be shown on various sites for hockey. Any help would be appreciated.

That is the moneyline based on a $100 bet. Boston +160 means they are the underdog and with a $100 bet you could win $160. Carolina -140 means they are the favorite and you would have to bet $140 to win $100.

Edit: Moneyline is just based on who wins the game has nothing to do with the spread.

If you bet $100 on Boston, you would profit $160 if they win. They're an underdog so there is a better return.

If you bet $140 on Carolina, you would profit $100 if they win. They're the favorite so there is a worse return.

And if you want to covert those ML odds to % of winning, for the favorite divide the moneyline by the ML +100. For the Dog, divide 100 into the ML +100.

So tonight, Florida-Tampa is Florida -160, Tampa +140.

So Florida's implied odds are 160/(100+160)=61.54%
Tampa is 100/(100+140)= 41.67%

If you add those up you get a 103.2% chance of winning. Man, i wonder why sports books are so profitable

You also will see most if not every single baseball game giving you -1.5 or +1.5 which is the run line. That will then have odds associated with it, given the likelihood of them actually winning by 2 or losing by less than 2.

If you bet $100 on Boston, you would profit $160 if they win. They're an underdog so there is a better return.

If you bet $140 on Carolina, you would profit $100 if they win. They're the favorite so there is a worse return.

Profit or win? If you bet $100 on Boston you win $160 right? Not $260.
