In part it's a crock about Thompson caring about much more than winning and himself.

"... pride in making sure his players actually received an education while at Georgetown. If they were not on the road for a game, they attended class. Every time. If they didn’t transfer away, they graduated, at an astonishing rate of 97 percent."

The guy ultimately ran off John Turner without any apparent regard for what happened to him.
(He actually wound up being a first round pick and playing a season in the NBA).
But the big speech to the drug kingpin seems to have amounted to very little.

Everything you need to know about Thompson was in the 30 for 30 about the Big East. He alternated between talking about how the Big East schools had to look out for each other, with asking why he was supposed to care about Syracuse and Pitt football. Guy was 100% about himself, although he paid lip service to greater purpose - but only because it gave him good publicity.

I can respect him for being a winner - but there’s literally no way to convince me he’s a decent human being.
