As the majors are so big, they can have their own thread. But wanted to create posts in a thread that you can discuss golf, and discuss golfers instead of getting lost in a Tiger bashing thread.

Not PGA, but pretty good event going on in the European Tour with a bunch of big names in contention as we come down to 9 holes to play in France. It also happens to be home course for the Ryder Cup in September this year, so you can get an advance look.

Rahm is down 1, Garcia and Thomas are down 2, and Noren is down 3. Some largely unknown golfer called Marcus Kinhult (WGR #180) got it up to -11, but fell to -8 after a triple. He is still tied for the lead with Julian Suri trying to hold up bigger names.-

An interesting watch for those taking it easy on a Sunday morning (Golf Channel)

Julian Suri is an American from NYC, who went the Euro route after graduating similar to Brooks Koepka and Peter Uehlein. It's an interesting way to get there instead of trying to go via Web.Com.
iti
If he can win today he would very close to win #40, which would get him into pretty much every major and WGC. Big final event for him.

Still some good drama, but it will not include any of the larger names like Rahm, Thomas or Garcia who all faded a little.

For Rahm, it was a triple bogey. Some club slamming, tossing, and several F Bombs from him on that hole.

World Ranking Points Gained Since January 1, 2018

1. Bubba Watson - 231
2. Dustin Johnson - 210
3. Patrick Reed - 198
4. Rory McIlroy - 190
5. Justin Thomas - 179
6. Bryson Dechambeau - 178
7. Alex Noren - 178
8. Tommy Fleetwood - 176
9. Jason Day - 173
10. Jon Rahm - 168

Probably the most surprising on that list (entering this year) would be Bubba Watson at #1. He started the year at #89 and is now up to #12 after 3 tour victories. He is a streaky player who hated the Volvik ball apparently.

Bryson Dechambeau had a ton of potential but I am surprised to see that he has played #6 in the world this year (entered the year at #99)

Some others of note:
#13 Phil Mickelson
#15 Justin Rose
#17 Rickie Fowler
#21 Jordan Speith
#34 Sergio Garcia
#40 Tiger Woods

I think #40 may be an accurate reflection of what we have in Tiger right now. #40 means you are fairly good. He is neither the star that he was in his 2012/2013 comeback, or the walking disaster he has been in other recent attempts at coming back. He has settled in as a good, but not elite golfer.

It ended up being a totally whacky ending where everybody screwed up the last few holes and Noren made it through safely and got the win from behind. Rahm and Garcia came back with the ability to send it to playoffs but both made blunders on the 18th.

Not the greatest of fields, but a very close ending to the Greenbrier. Some more journeyman types at the top with Bubba Watson right there. Kevin Na is probably somewhere in between good and journeyman, but he is always good for a mental brain freeze down the stretch to lose.

In live betting:
Kevin Na - + 175
Varner + 400
Bubba + 400
Kraft + 700
Dahmen +1200

On another note, Phil Mickelson broke the rules once again and was assessed a 2 stroke penalty.

What did Phil do?

And

What is this year?? A Presidents Cup??

Oh Phil! Golfers are so weird. Like that grass would affect a tee shot in any way?

There was a piece of fescue that bothered him as he wanted to hit a low stinger type drive. So he moved forward and patted down the descue improving his line of sight. Unintentional, but a penalty.

Ryder Cup in France

Kevin Na is somehow playing great. Now up to -700 in live betting. If somebody can blow up I still trust him.

Probably the best fourth round putting I have seen by anybody in contention this year (after 10 holes)

Could be a good day for Canadian golf fans on Tuesday. I know most of you don't care, but those of us that like to watch our national championship have been getting the shaft for years in terms of field quality. And it is all due to the schedule.

The Canadian Open is one of the most highly attended and most expensive (non major) tickets on tour. And it is sponsored by RBC ( Royal Bank Canada, who saved Hilton Head and is a major tour sponsor). Yet the PGA still gives the Canadian Open the biggest shaft on the tour for about the past decade.

This has been the schedule for about the past dozen years:
British Open
Canadian Open
WGC Bridgestone
PGA

Golfers do not play like to play 4 events in a row, so guess what any top 50 player skips? The Canadian Open. So the field sucks.

Apparently the PGA may finally make it up, and put the Canadian Open at a fairly good spot. The tournament before the US Open. We will see Tuesday.

EDIT - After a little more research this has been confirmed.

how is this different than what they do all the time with stepping down on the tee box and then putting the t into the ground?

most pros don't stamp down on the tee boxes anymore for fear of breaking the rule. If they do lightly tap, i'd assume they'd say they're not "creating or eliminating irregularities of surface" which is the wording of the rule.

Yup. confirmed. Headed to Hamilton for first time since 2012

But my guess would be the line of sight rule applies to objects outside of the tee box.

European Tour Event but a real dandy with some real underdog stories and some good players like Rickie Fowler and Tyrell Hatton on the leaderboard.

Trever Immelman, 2007 Masters Champion., is tied for the lead. You may that is not that unusual. But he has 46 cuts in his last 55 events over the last 4 years. Ranked #1380 in the world. In his last 4 years his best finish was 28th.

With the back 9 to come there are 15 people reasonably in contention.

On the PGA Tour, at a very weak John Deere event, Michael KIm a former college Star, is in the lead. Ranked #161 on tour he is pulling away with a 5 shot lead.

This is a high pressure event for Kim in terms of card retention, so it may be worth spreading the shackles on a few other guys at high odds. Although every one else on the leaderboard is fighting for the top 125 as well.

Joel Dahmen is 9 shots behind in 7th, (but within 4 of first). He is the first guy on the leaderboard that has secured his card for next year. He has good form recently, and I am going to place a $10 flyer at 66-1 on him.

It's interesting when you watch a course like Gullane vs Shinnecock.

Gullane is the standard yellowish, but they keep some :green on their putting surfaces. It was the exact opposite at Shinnecock. The course stayed some green, but the putting services were baked.

Dustin Johnson entered today in a 4 way tie against Kim, An, and Tway. He gained control by 3 three shots by hole #6 I believe, and brought it home with players in reach but never being really threatened.

In Europe, Bryson DeChambeau does the Jamie Dixon blowby to the winner after losing on the final hole.

I might be misreading this post but DeChambeau lost by 5 strokes. But he was in the final group with the winner. So he could have given him the blow by.

Was at GA today... followed DJ he makes the game look so easy at some point it almost got dull watching. He's that good.

He was in the final group.

The leader was -10 heading into the final hole, and DeChambeau was -9 one shot of the group tied for the lead. So he was clearly into it going into the last hole.

McEvoy had a 4 (a birdie) and Dechambeau had an 8 (a triple bogey) after hooking his drive into the water,

A blow by for a winner is largely unheard of in golf and he was called out by some other pros yesterday.

FYI, he apologized today.
