CLASS AA

Section 2’s Troy scored on five of its first six possessions to take a 36-7 lead and went on to beat Section 9’s Newburgh Free Academy 50-27. They will now play Section 1’s New Rochelle, who had a bye in the semi-finals.

Section 3’s CBA took care of business against Section 4’s Binghamton, winning 40-14 behind a three touchdown performance by Stevie Scott:

CLASS B

Section 1’s Pleasantville didn’t find a 22-20 halftime lead over Section 9’s New Paltz very pleasant so they used big plays to pull away to a 56-20 win:

Section 2’s Glens Falls used 6 turnovers to subdue Section 7’s Peru 48-19, in a sloppy game. The Indians overcame 16 penalties to secure the win:

Section 3’s Cazenovia’s dream of a second straight state title died before the relentless Blue Devils of Chenango Forks, who bolted to a 28-0 halftime lead and extended it to 35-0 before allowing two late scores to make it respectable at 35-13:

Section 6’s Dunkirk won a wild 50-48 overtime game over Section 5’s Batavia “in a game that will be talked about forever”:

CLASS C

Section 1’s perennial state power Dobbs Ferry built a 20-7 first half lead over Section 9’s Burke Catholic but could not hold the lead, largely due to three fumbles, losing 20-21:

Section 2’s Greenwich fumbled on the 2 yard line of Section 10’s Ogdensburg Free Academy with 5:48 left in the game, preventing them from extending their 27-24 lead. The OFA Blue Devils then went on a 98 yard drive, scoring with 20 second to go to take a 30-27 lead and that was the final score:

Section 3’s Lowville failed to repeat their defensive heroics against Canastota and General Brown, going down rather meekly to Section 4’s Newark Valley, 34-0:

Section 5’s Bishop Kearney won a 40-38 thriller over Section 6’s Cleveland Hill, 40-38. “he unbeaten Kings (11-0) used a 20-point fourth quarter to overcome deficits of 12, 10 and four points and prevent the Golden Eagles (9-2) from advancing to the state semifinals for the second time in their history.”

CLASS D

Section 1’s Haldane subdued Section 9’s Downsville/Roscoe 14-6 to advance to the semi-finals of the state playoffs. The game was a battle of two teams with combined records of 5-13 due to the dearth of Class D schools in both sections. Both teams had to play teams in higher classifications to fill out their schedules:

Section 2’s Cambridge blew past Section 7’s Ticonderoga 55-28. Cambridge built up a 21-0 lead but saw Ti get back to 35-28 and try an onsides kick in the fourth quarter. But offensive tackle Max Hoffer scooped up the ball and rumbled 47 yards to score. It began a 20-0 run that salted the game away:

Section 3’s Onondaga knew how Hillary Clinton felt after everything necessary for their opponent to win the game happened down the stretch of their 36-42 loss to Section 4’s Sydney. The Tigers were leading 36-22 in the fourth quarter and had dominated the contest running for over 300 yards when two successive drives deep into Warrior territory resulted in fumbles that went through the end zone for touchbacks. Still, they led by that score going into the final minute. Sydney scored on a fourth down pass play with 47 seconds left. They then scored a two point conversion to make it 36-30. They attempted an onside kick and two Onondaga players surrounded the ball. One moved to pick it up and kicked it. Sydney recovered and then scored on a hook-and-lateral play with 28 second left. The two point conversion was missed, leaving the game tied when regulation ended. The Tigers were intercepted in their possession in overtime and the Warriors then pushed the ball forward with a series of runs against the demoralized Tigers until the inevitable happened and the game was over. So how was your night?

Section 6’s Maple Grove turned a defensive duel into a route to beat Section 5’s Alexander 28-0. The winners had only 219 yards total offense but the losers had only 142. Maple Grove wore the Trojans down and scored a third quarter TD and two more in the fourth to win convincingly.

Semi-Final Match-Ups

CLASS AA

Section1 - New Rochelle 10-0 (340-62) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 5/608 States: 17-8 with 4titles
Vs.
Section 2- Troy 11-0 (418-119) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 3/449 States: 15-5 with 2 titles

Section 3- Christian Brothers Academy 10-0 (383-89) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 2/328 States: 11-9 with 1 title
Vs.
Section 5- Victor 11-0 (337-100) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 4/470 States: 3-3 with 0 titles

Comment: The NYS sportswriters have Victor as their #1 team but Max Preps rates CBA ahead of everybody except Chenango Forks, who is in Class B. So the Brothers would seem to have a legitimate shot at their second state championship. But the competition in this class will be the greatest of any: the four teams are a combined 43-0. Something’s gotta give.

CLASS A

Section 1- Somers 10-1 (402-157) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 9/1008 States: 1-3 with 0 titles
Vs.
Section 2- Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 10-1 (462-177) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 50/1968 States: 11-5 with 1 title

Section 3- Whitesboro 11-0 (363-108) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 11/1081 States: 5-6 with 0 titles
Vs.
Section 5- Greece Athena 11-0 (396-140) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps7/887 States: 1-0 with 0 titles

Comment: The top two teams in the NYS sportswriter’s poll are in sections 8 and 11, who don’t participate in the tournament. That leaves Whitesboro as the defacto #1 team, although MaxPreps obviously doesn’t quite agree. Still, Tom Schoen’s perennial powerhouse as a real shot at winning their first ever state championship.

CLASS B

Section 1- Pleasantville 11-0 (325-89) NYSSWA #5 MaxPreps 21/1522 States: 1-1 with 3 titles
Vs.
Section 2- Glens Falls 11-0 (497-133) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 8/887 States: 4-2 with 0 titles

Section 4- Chenango Forks 11-0 (423-91) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 1/276 States: 27-9 with 5 titles
Vs.
Section 6- Dunkirk 9-2 (418-156) NYSSWA #6 MaxPreps 22/1526 States : 1-0 with 0 titles

Comments: Max Preps ahs Forks, going for a foruth straight state ttile, (the three presious in Calss C), ranked as the #1 team in the state- overall. They would favor them over the Class A and AA teams above. And they looked it, rolling to a 35-0 lead against defending Class B champion Cazenovia before coasting to a 35-13 win. Whoever wins the east will be a formidable team. But if the Blue Devils don’t win, it will be the upset of the year in NYS.

CLASS C

Section 9- Burke Catholic 8-3 (311-186) NYSSWA #7 MaxPreps 241/7793 States: 1-2 with 0 titles
Vs.
Section 10-Ogdensburg Free Academy 9-2 (469-176) NYSSWA #4 MaxPreps 93/4172 States: 1-4 with 0 titles

Section 4- Newark Valley 11-0 (484-83) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 20/1519 States: 1-0 with 0 title
Vs.
Section 5- Bishop Kearney 11-0 (409-228) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 72/3716 States: 2-1 with 0 titles

Comments: Thanks to upsets, the western semi-final seems like the real championship but that can be deceiving, especially fi the players come to see it that way. Still, Newark Valley seems to be clearly the bets team and Section 4 has won the last titles in this class, thanks to Chenango Forks.

CLASS D

Section 1- Haldane 3-6 (133-226) NYSSWA NR MaxPreps 564/13589 States: 3-3 with 0 titles
Vs.
Section 2- Cambridge 11-0 (601-81) NYSSWA #2 MaxPreps 48/2892 States: 16-12 with 1 title

Section 4- Sydney 8-3 (429-291) NYSSWA #3 MaxPreps 53/3095 States: 4-1 with 1 title
Vs.
Section 6- Maple Grove 11-0 (453-66) NYSSWA #1 MaxPreps 25/1798 States: 8-5 with 2 titles

Comments: Cambridge should have a walk-over against Haldane, a product of the screwy 5 class system, which leaves some sections almost without teams in certain classes. Sydney’s luck should run out against #1 ranked Maple Grove, a perennial power who has been down this road before and has the best defense in the state.
