Preseason Coaches Poll is out

Seems reasonable to go from where are are to 18-20 if we upset the Vols in week one.

Given we are not too far out and they are 18…
OMFG I will go full General Sherman on Atlanta if that happens.

And by that I mean, I will sit at a bar with a giant smile on my face watching the rest of the days games.

yet we were 12th in the ACC preseason poll...makes sense
I think maybe the ACC preseason prediction poll is a prediction of finish in the ACC standings which typically falls in line with betting odds. Not necessarily the order of who is the best. With our very difficult ACC schedule, both rankings could easily be true.

Pre-season polls are stupid and creates an inherent disadvantage/advantage based on a perception of where you are with limited information. OK thank you I will get off my soap box now
The AP and Coaches polls are simply entertainment. It gives fans a frame of reference of where teams stand. I personally like it and it fires me up going into the season knowing we have a chance to beat a Top 20 SEC team.

The CFP poll (what actually matters) is merit based and isn’t released until like November.

Strong counterpoints my friend

We are...
at #5 Notre Dame
at #6 Clemson
at #10 Miami
at #16 SMU
basically at #18 Tennessee

Also, most importantly, we got 16 votes!

Also note that 16 votes puts us at #40. Adding GT and Duke below we get:

at #5 Notre Dame
at #6 Clemson
at #10 Miami
at #16 SMU
basically at #18 Tennessee
at #37 Georgia Tech
Home vs #44 Duke

You do know Sherman commanded the army of Tennessee for the Union, right?
BUT General Sherman grew up in Lancaster, OH
You know who was from Lancaster, PA?
PERRY PATTERSON

ORGANE BY 44...LGO!!!

Ohhh, I got a pre-season poll rant...

Ready for it?...

The writers and coaches polls are way too freakin' small!

Those polls expanded from 20 teams to 25 teams in 1989. There were 106 D1A schools in 1989, so 24% of all teams were ranked each week.

Fast forward to today and there's 136 FBS teams. Which means 18% of teams are ranked each week.

Personally, I think the polls should be expanded to a top 35. That'd be 26% of teams. And it'd help with TV interest as well. There's research that shows a team being ranked makes a statistically significant impact on TV ratings. A matchup featuring #33 vs. unranked, or #9 vs. #28 would generate more viewing.

The top 20 was better than 25. I think 25 is pretty good right now.

In other news... Fran is a voter. Do you think he voted for Syracuse or do you think he would purposefully not do that? Or did someone else do it just so it could look like he did? Or, most likely, just a few lazy coaches looking at last year's rankings...
