Hey folks. Hitting Puerto Vallarta the end of October (20th-25th is what we're looking at)

Anyone have a favorite place to stay?

At first we were just looking at an all inclusive somewhere, kind of place where we didn't need to leave the resort. Now she wants to stay in the Romantic Zone, so all inclusive isn't that big of a necessity as it seems there are many options for food and drink in the area. Some hotels have both standard packages, and all inclusive packages, and if the difference is ~$50/night I'd take the all inclusive, between breakfast and my day drinking skills, seems worth it.

Any tips on activities?

Thanks in advance!

We had our honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta.

So... don't have any recommendations. Was a bit... preoccupied.

I would highly advise to not do an all inclusive. Eating bland hotel food and drinking watery coronas out of a plastic cup the entire time is a complete waste of being in Mexico. Getting out and exploring the restaurants and taco stands and getting a real feel for the culture is the best part of the country. There is nothing to fear in exploring Puerto Vallarta at all if you're not out at like 3am searching for drugs and flashing tons of cash. You're experience will be wayyyyy better, I promise. I've been throughout a lot of the country and have never once ran into any kind of problem. Not to mention with the exchange being somewhere around 19 pesos per dollar, you will be able to have way better food and much better drinks for a ton less than that all inclusive price.

Reading that alone would make me not want anything to do with an all-inclusive. Word of advice, anywhere where you see the Al Pastor on the spit with pineapple on top. Order multiple and make sure to ask for the pineapple with it. Good lord that is probably my favorite thing in the world that costs a dollar or less.

My aunt has a condo there and my folks go every year. I'll ask for some recommendations.

So another couple that might be going with us is worried about PV and hurricane season. My girl thinks we will probably be fine, but since the whole point of this trip is for her to have a hot sunny beach before I make her fly to cold weather locations following Cuse around, I want to make sure (as much as we can) that the weather is going to be good.

Thoughts on Aruba?

We would want to book plane tickets to Aruba tonight, as Alaska Air has a deal $199 to JFK that ends tonight. We want to take Alaska as far as possible for the miles lol.

Settled on Aruba. Tickets there booked. She was booking tickets back, and I realized we would land in NYC on the 24th, and we play NC State @ home on the 27th. Trying to sell her on that.

Very good choice. We loved it. Felt safe the entire time we were there. Everyone is super friendly, beaches are nice, restaurants within walking distance of most resorts...what's not to love.

Perfect! Any hotel recommendations, or areas to stay?

Also, football game isn't gonna work out. Those couple extra days of leave I was going to take, I'll need for the two basketball games, and ND game in November, and our bowl game.

Crap, I just got back from Iceland and wasn't able to respond quick enough. Aruba is solid. Not a lot of culture or great food as its a Dutch colony but weather and beaches are excellent. Did one of the ATV tours to the natural pool and can recommend that.

We stayed at Eagle beach. Can't remember the resort though. Very laid back area. My wife's favorite place is Baby beach. Tons of marine life. Very cool.

I would recommend an excursion of some sort. We did a jeep tour around the entire island. It lasted about 6 hours and made stops at an old fort, lighthouse, baby beach, and a few other places I can't remember haha.

We stayed at Divi Phoenix. NIce place, real nice stretch of beach, kind of on the quiet end of the beach. We had a car but you could walk to places. Some resorts had a casino. This one does not. Aruba was a little too commercial for us but we had a good time. The thing I remember most was how gouda the cheese was. We got a take out pizza from Pizza Hut and it was one of the best pizzas that I ever had. We also went on a private snorkel charter with octopus snorkeling and they served gouda cheese on a buttered roll. It was incredible how tasty something so simple could be. I having a hankering for some right now.

That hotel is on her short list! We won’t get a car (I don’t plan to be sober enough to drive) so we’ll walk, or cab? (What’s the cab situation like?)
Thanks so much for the info!

According to this map, all of these places are within a mile of the Divi Phoenix, so I don't think you will starve. I'm sure there are cabs but I couldn't tell you about them. I forget how close the supermarket was but we definitely hit it up for snacks and beer.

That commercial comment was the same issue I had. It was way too Americanized and I got no sense of culture anywhere we wandered.

Anyone ever fly Copa Airlines?

We are booked on Alaska to JFK and back and are looking to book the JFK-Aruba part. (She keeps going back and forth on where she actually wants to go. I think she's sent me links to every resort in Aruba, and a bunch in spain.. idk)

Anyway, we're looking at flights on Copa, but she's nervous because she's never heard of them. Reviews don't look too bad.

If you have the chance to not do Aruba. I would not do Aruba ;)
