Getting back to the spread vs pro-style debate. Do you think that talent has the same role in both systems? That is, does each system allow superior talent (offense vs. opponent's defense) to maximize its effect? Does one system allow talent to "shine" more than the other?

Look, it's pretty simple. Great talent renders the system somewhat irrelevant. IMO, if you have NFL linemen and tight ends - a pro style is not a bad choice. Otherwise you're better off with something that spreads the field.

The only reason to be pro-style is if you think it helps you recruit better.

My opinion is that it is a meathead luxury for the richest programs who recruit the type of talent that will succeed in any offense.

I don't see much evidence of successful pro style offenses in non-factories. Stanford being the exception but they're huge up front and have the best qb just about ever so they're temporarily a factory (they'll come back down to earth fast, I think)

What makes an offense pro-style vs. spread? Is it the formations? Percentage of run vs. pass?

predominantly qb under center
no option
tight ends
3/5 step drop
power running game
a million formations

i think you can get away with smaller backs running out of the shotgun in college with slower defenses and i don't think colleges have enough depth at db to get up on 4 wr without one of them breaking free. and qbs are more expendable in college.

I pulled this from another board...teams running pro-style

Alabama
ASU
Michigan
Michigan State
Miami
Temple
Florida will be in transition to a pro style offense
FSU
UW
Texas made the switch last season
Cal
USC
UCLA
Stanford
Tenn
PSU -for the most part still runs a pro scheme, however they're also about 50% spread nowadays
Pitt
Rutgers
BC
Oregon State
Ark
Boise -can be called a pro style team , more of a hybrid though
Colorado- I believe is transitioning back to a pro-style scheme
UNC
Ohio State-more of a hybrid

Don't know how accurate it is...
