9. Syracuse — Porous shortstick midfield and LSM defense were the primary culprits in a 13-8 loss at Cornell on Tuesday night. Allowing Dodgers to get topside, to the middle and to their strong hand is a recipe for failure. Orange pick defense has been an issue all year long. So you're wondering why SU doesn't play more zone defense? Because when they did, Cornell abused them on the interior. Lay-ups. Slam dunks. Ball Watch City. Stephen Rehfuss contributed four points, but the Orange were minus-13 in groundball margin and got out scored 5-1 over the second and third quarters. The offense took a step backward. David Lipka can shoot it with his feet set, but who are the dodgers who can draw consistent doubles? Non-conference losses to Albany, Johns Hopkins, Cornell and Rutgers shows how the ACC has fallen.

Saturday was an imperfect gem. A 13-12 OT win in the Dome was a giant step toward the NCAA Tournament. Freshman Brendan Curry erased a three-goal deficit as Otto upended a North Carolina team that has now lost seven-straight games dating back to March 3. The Tar Heels had multiple opportunities to put the game away but failed to do so. ’Cuse was led by Nate Solomon (4G), Matt Lane, Brendan Bomberry and Curry, who scored the final two goals of regulation (1:34 and :40) to tie it and then assisted Bomberry on the game-winner. Orange didn't play well but escaped with a W. Too many sloppy passes and decisions with the ball nearly proved costly. It was great to see the Orange fans who stopped by the booth or waved to say hello. The Dome is a special place and there is nothing quite like the energy in that building when the Syracuse starts humming.

Otto hosts Navy on April 21, a rematch of the 2004 NCAA title game.
