Is there a direct contact with our men’s basketball program who can get in touch with me about a potential high major recruit in Texas? I have been a family friend for about 15 years here in Texas of a family with an 8th grade student with a 3.9 GPA taking 10th grade classes and is being heavily influenced to attend numerous summer basketball camps and play with AAU squads. He is also already been noticed by Scottie Pippen, the former Chicago Bulls champion and with his son allegedly or possibly attending Vanderbilt University, they are desperately trying to get him to attend their camp this summer in Nashville. He has not yet had his growth spurt but is expected to be about a 6’ 6” 1 or 2 guard. As a natural benefactor for this family for many years, and with things heating up significantly for my friend, he has asked me for my help in protecting his son while I have of course been an advocate for Syracuse. I do not believe I could run afoul of NCAA guidelines by escorting him or helping to provide transportation and expenses because I have done these things for the family for years in the past but at this point I believe it would be more appropriate to see what interest level there may be from Syracuse before his other options may be explored as well.

What you have done in the past is no guarantee that it would be considered allowable in the future. There is a white paper on compliance that goes out every year to season ticket holders. I'd suggest you get a current copy from the Compliance Office by sending an e-mail to Mark Wheeler, the Associate AD for Compliance. Mark's email is mwheel01

Here is what I did with FB. Call the office. I called and spoke with a coach directly. They recruited the kid. Became a starter.
When I was in law school at SU, I called the b-ball office to inquire about being a grad assistant. JB himself answered the phone.
It's not Oz or Fort Knox.

I'm no expert, but I believe it depends upon your connection to the school. Are you a big donor/booster? Or are you receiving anything for your services? If the answer is no to those questions, then I can't think of a reason why you, as a friend of the family, are not allowed to help guide the kid/family during the recruiting process. Just my opinion.
