He eventually became one of the faces of 'new age' music, in a somewhat pejorative sense. Like the stuff you hear in that mall shop with crystals and the sound of running water coming from somewhere.
Around the same time of the film music, he did that collaboration with Jon Anderson of Yes (The Friends of Mr. Cairo), which was popular for about three minutes.
Vangelis probably deserves to belong in that group of artists (new age/ambient/soundtrack/whatever) that includes Tangerine Dream, Kitaro, Mike Oldfield, Jean-Michel Jarre, etc.).
