“With these new rules, we’re not able to do anything,” Smith told me following Louisville’s loss to Kentucky at Rupp. “Now when we use our hands, it’s a foul.”

“It was just different last year,” he added. “We knew how to use our hands.”

So great to see him publicly saying this.

Here is the whole article, a solid read about how much Louisville sucks this year:

Tough to win when thug ball gets outlawed.

Pitt will soon learn this too

Agreed...And we benefited against Nova too. At least two drives last Saturday would of been charges last year. I really like the new emphasis!

In bygone years, if you wanted to ref for say, the Big 10, you were invited to/attended an identification camp (read: try-out). And you auditioned before a panel of the more senior coaches from whatever league you were trying to get on with. Which is why guys like Bobby Knight never got T'd for crap like pounding the scorer's table so hard the phone flew off it - because if you dared to T him, you'd never ref in that conference again. Is this still the way things are done? Do refs still have to "audition" every year? Anyone know?

Still think it's more not having Dieng back there to swat away their mistakes than it is the focusing on the enforcement of the new rules. But it's good to know that is now in the back of their minds in case we meet up with them in the tourney and as we move forward as conference mates again starting next year. ;)

Also, keep in mind that he's making this statement after the UK loss, where the refs are so afraid of the UK crowd that they always tend to call a lot of fouls on the opposing team.

Cheers,
Neil
