I guess I'm just ignorant of some obvious reasons for a retractable roof. Please tell me what they are other than for some esthetic value.

The Retractable roof I think would allow the stadium to hold concerts/shows in the summer. Right now they can't do that in the Carrier Dome because of no open air/air conditioning in the summer.

But we are talking about a new stadium that could have a different air quality system than the dome. I didn't realize there was a problem like you indicated in all enclosed stadiums.
