Pitching Dual Doesn't Fall In 'Cuse's FavorAfter a wild pitch in the first allowed an Akron runner to take third, the Zips scored their first run of the game on a single to left. In the bottom of the inning, Syracuse followed up with a run of its own after Ozanne's 100th career hit to load the bases and Wambold knocked Doane in to score.

Both teams were held silent until Akron's Alyssa Nicholas got ahold of a pitch and gave it a ride to left for their second run of the game. The run was all the Zips needed as they were able to hold Syracuse at bay the rest of the way.

Late Surge Falls Short

Jacksonville homered to center in the second to take a 1-0 lead and then tagged the Orange for three more on a bases clearing double in the third. Cater shut down the Dolphins the ensuing four innings allowing Syracuse to make a comeback.

Fernandez was credited with an RBI when she scored Dewes for their first run of the game in the fourth. Chitkowski then cut the lead to one with a two-run blast to center, scoring Kristina Kinsey. Needing a run in the seventh, Ozanne answered the call with her fourth home run of the year to tie the game at four but one was all Syracuse would get in the inning, forcing extras.

In the eighth, Chitkowski singled to right, advancing ShaVonne Higgins to third with no outs. Annie Toczynski pinch ran for Chitkowski and stole second. Jacksonville was able to get a strikeout and catch a break after Higgins was tagged out at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch. Doane then lined out to the center fielder to end the inning.

In the bottom half, Cater had runners on first and second no outs but was able to record her 16th strikeout of the game. The following at-bat, Cater got the ground ball but the Orange was unable to turn the double play to end the inning as the runner on second scored the winning run.

Live Stats

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – The Orange (4-5) came out swinging in both of its games, scoring 11 runs on the day but prevailed in one-of-two games. Syracuse defeated Bethune-Cookman, 5-4 to begin the day but later fell to Jacksonville in the eighth after a walk-off home run gave the Dolphins a 8-6 victory.

Offense Prevails Against Bethune-Cookman

O'Hara pitched four innings of scoreless ball to keep the Wildcats at bay while the Orange built its lead. Ozanne kicked things off for 'Cuse with a solo shot to left field in the first, after that, 'Cuse was held scoreless until the third when Dewes set the table for the top of the lineup with a walk and a stolen base, allowing Doane to score her with a double.

Fernandez followed up Doane's double with an infield single, bringing Ozanne to the plate. Unwilling to gamble with Ozanne, the Wildcats walked Ozanne to get to Julie Wambold who hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Doane.

Syracuse wasn't able to score until Dewes walked again, once again setting the table for the top of the lineup as Doane followed up with a single up the middle. Fernandez capitalized with a single to right, scoring Dewes and Doane to take a 5-0 lead in the fourth.

Over the course of the next 1.2 innings, Bethune-Cookman was able to pick up three runs off of O'Hara who handed the ball to Jocelyn Cater who gave up a run, but closed out the game for the save, giving O'Hara and Syracuse the 5-4 victory.

Jacksonville Walks Off… Again
Ozanne began the game just as she did the previous contest with a solo jack to center field to give Cater a one-run lead to work with until the Dolphins were able to tie the game in the fourth. Despite giving up a run the previous half inning, the top of the lineup produced a four-run fifth inning.

Dewes walked with one out in the fifth, giving Doane another RBI opportunity that she did not miss out on. The leadoff hitter struck a double to straightaway center to score Dewes. Ozanne then followed up with her second home run of the game to bring in two. After Wambold reached on an error and O'Hara singled, Cater gave herself some insurance with an RBI single.

Syracuse took its 5-1 lead into the seventh and was able to score a run before being faced with two outs. Just an out away from a 5-2 victory, Jacksonville roped a bases clearing double to center to tie the game at five and send the game into extras.

Cater singled to right-center, immediately scoring Annie Toczynski to start the inning but one was all the Orange would get as Jacksonville was faced with a one-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth. Cater was able to get two outs in the inning but a double tied the game at six and the very next batter homered to left to walk off with the victory, 8-6.

vs. Loyola Marymount

2/20/2015 - 4:00 PM EST

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In its final test of the weekend, Syracuse (4-6) falls to Akron (6-4) after a late comeback defeats the Orange, 4-3. Julie Wambold reached base in all

three of her plate appearances with two base knocks and three runs batted in.

Syracuse jumped on Akron right away with Maddi Doane setting the table with another double out of the leadoff spot. Sammy Fernandez immediately followed up with an infield single, advancing Doane to third. Wambold then cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line to give Syracuse its first two runs of the game.

In the bottom of the first, Akron came through with two outs and a runner on, doubling off of Jocelyn Cater to bring in is first run of the game and cut Syracuse's lead to one.

Both teams struggled to get anything going until Akron tagged Sydney O'Hara for three runs in the fifth after a pair of singles gave them a 3-2 lead and a single with two outs scored the deciding run, giving Akron a 4-2 advantage.

Needing base runners, Fernandez was the catalyst for 'Cuse in the top of the sixth, singling to left center. The Zips refused to pitch to Corinne Ozanne, walking her to get to Wambold with runners on first and second, no outs in the inning. Wambold scored Fernandez from second on a single up the middle to cut Akron's lead to one, but one run was all the Orange could manufacture the rest of the way as Akron walked away the victor by a 4-3 score.
