If my kid were an elite recruit, I would tell him not to sign on signing day. Just give a verbal commitment. If the head coach reneges on anything, such as firing an assistant coach after signing day, then you are still free to change your mind.

Yes but that also leaves you vulnerable to not having a spot.

I specified if my kid were an elite recruit. If a five-star kid committed to SU, you don't think Babers would save his spot if no LOI was signed?

No I don't.

I would never sign an LOI. I would sign those scholarship papers. I could be wrong but I don't believe they behind you.

In the end you committ to a head coach and school. I know assistants lead the recruitment of specific players, but go to a school bc of the good vibe of people you meet on your visit, the HC, and academics.

Not entirely true. The student-athlete could sign a financial-aid-in-grant agreement with the school which effectively binds the school to providing a scholarship for the first year, should the recruit choose to enroll. While there may not be a spot on the team, at least the student gets a year of education free and has the ability to move on. For comparison purposes, the NLI is only required to provide a scholarship for the student-athlete for one season. I believe some schools have begun offering a 4-Yr scholarship guarantee with the signing of the NLI, but I believe it's up to the school to decide.

EDIT: Here's a well written article discussing this very thing... Why Top NCAA Recruits Shouldn't Sign NLI's.

Sign a grant in aid, not a LOI
