Fab Melo included in the 14 defining moments in the 2012 NCAA Championship's

Yes, this Kentucky team was a statistical force, a dominating outfit in league, which entered the NCAA Tournament with just two blemishes. But it wasn't the best team nationally for the majority of the season -- that honor went to Syracuse with Fab Melo (29-1).

JB's original statement on the loss of Fab Melo

Syracuse center Fab Melo issues statement declaring he will enter 2012 NBA Draft

The 7’0” center averaged 7.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, but NBA scouts are not blown away. He has an NBA body and is pretty mobile, but he is not a guy with many post moves (he got his points in college because he is really tall and stands near the basket) and there are questions about his feel for the game.

PORTLAND, OREGON -April 4, 2012 - Portland Trail Blazers point guard Jonny Flynn (3) gets past New Jersey Nets guard Sundiata Gaines (1) as the Portland Trail Blazers face the New Jersey Nets at the Rose Garden. Bruce Ely / The Oregonian

On Sunday night, newcomers Jonny Flynn and J.J. Hickson joined second-year forward Luke Babbitt to play key roles in the win over Minnesota. Facing off against a Timberwolves second unit that has been devastated by injuries, the Blazers' own makeshift reserve corps proved a difference-maker.

The irony was obvious in former Minnesota lottery pick Jonny Flynn helping deal a crushing blow to his former team's playoff chances. Acquired at the deadline largely because his expiring contract fit in the trade that sent Marcus Camby to Houston, Flynn has gotten an opportunity to play the last four games with first Raymond Felton (personal) and now rookie Nolan Smith (ear infection) out of action. Flynn had 10 points and five assists on Tuesday against Oklahoma City, five points and three assists in L.A. and four points and a season-high seven assists Sunday against the team that drafted him.

Like Hickson, Flynn is now being put in more favorable situations. He was terribly mismatched in Kurt Rambis' triangle offense and was stuck behind two terrific point guards this season in Houston, so this is Flynn's first chance to run a typical NBA attack. Portland is in little danger of being overtaken by "Flynnsanity" any time soon, but Flynn has looked like a competent backup point guard, which is a step up from his disappointing, injury-plagued 2010-11 campaign.

Flynn will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, making any action he gets over the season's final month essentially an open audition to the rest of the league. For players like him and Hickson, who will be restricted, these games may as well be the playoffs.

Wes watches the action in Portland on Sunday

To make matters worse, the Wolves got beat partly by two guys who have a history with them:

Jonny Flynn had a season-high seven assists working the pick and rolls all night -- remember when he did that in Kurt Rambis' triangle offense? NOT! -- in a backup role and Luke Babbitt made a couple threes and scored eight points.

You probably well remember the Wolves drafted Flynn sixth overall in 2009 and traded him just two years later, giving the Rockets an extra second-round pick just so they'd accept him after an iffy physical.

As if that weren’t bad enough, Lee and Ellington both had the misfortune of being shredded by Jonny Flynn in the pick-and-roll game. (This puts two somewhat opposing thoughts into my mind. The first is something like wonderment at how they managed to achieve this, considering that, in our experience, the best way to defend Jonny Flynn has seemed to be: stay in front of him; watch him dribble for 20 seconds; wait for him to take a bad shot. The second is that the long-distance Rambis-haters were perhaps onto something when they suggested that the Triangle was constraining Flynn’s creativity and that all he really needed was a steady diet of pick-and-rolls.

Hope Flynn keeps playing well. Would be nice to see him get a starting spot somewhere next season.

You kidding? He won't be starting anywhere next year. He'd fit in nicely with the Knicks at backup PG IMO, replacing Baron Davis.
