Congratulations to our famous 44’s, but how many times are they going to be recognized? It’s almost matter of fact now. We’ve had other great players that should be recognized. It just seems like SU has to move on to
Why continue to have them recognized? Because Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, and Floyd Little set the standard for running backs at SU. I have no idea how old you are, so possibly I think you have no way of comparing those three backs with the backs that have come after them at SU. But I can say that I watched all three play. I was ten years old watching Brown at old Archbold. Although at the time, I was too young to understand what greatness I was witnessing, as I became a Cleveland Browns fan and watched Brown run through, over and around defensive players, I began to understand just how remarkable he was.
As for Ernie Davis, I was at every home game at Archbold during his playing days. If my father didn’t take me to a game, then I walked there from my home on Syracuse North Side. By that time I had a back to compare Ernie with, and that back was Jim Brown. Even at my young age, I knew I was witnessing the era of another great running back at SU.
Then along comes Floyd Little. My God, for those of us that were lucky to witness the powerful, shifty, speedy Little wreck havoc on defenders was a sight to behold. And again, I was able to compare Little, to the previous two backs Brown and Davis. My conclusion after watching decades of SU running backs, as well as many in college football, all three of those backs, had no equals anywhere in college football at that time. And to have each played at SU, what a blessing.
Today's young football viewers have only modern-day players to compare. So I can understand the “but how many times are they going to be recognized” mantra by some. “How many times should they be recognized?” Can the same be said for baseball players in the HOF or NFL players in Canton Ohio?
I’ve watched every great back at SU since the days of Jim, Ernie, and Floyd, and yes we’ve had great backs…but…none of them are in the mold of any of those three. Brown, Davis, and Little set the standard of greatness at SU. And they should be recognized as often as possible for what they gave to Syracuse University football. And after all, aren’t they what other backs that come to SU strive to be like?
All three backs, if a hole in the line wasn’t there, they ran through defenders. And forget about ankle tackling them. Jim Brown never ran out of bounds. He would punish defenders to stay in bounds. I would recommend that you spend some time on YouTube and watch the power and finesse of those three backs. Hopefully, after doing so you’ll understand better why they should always be recognized for setting the standard at SU.
Sidenote: If Ernie Davis had lived to play in the same backfield with Jim Brown, I can only imagine how great that team would have been.
