Have a good friend who is an faculty athletic liaison for a D-1 university. He said today that all schools prior to any NCAA sanctioned tournament must certify all of their players grades and eligibility, along with the course load for the current semester.
If it wasn't academic, they must also adhere to NCAA drug testing. If an athlete tests positive by the NCAA, that player is banned for one year from intercollegiate athletics. So if it were drug related it would make sense for SU to do random testing and get out in front of the NCAA since they wouldn't have to suspend Fab for a year if there was even a slight expectation he might come back next year.
I have no clue what happened, just trying to add a little context to everything.
