Syracuse Football: Arthur Jones on NFL Draft - CitrusTV 1-on-1 Interview

    Former Players

Tiller from Syracuse, we had a little bit of inside information. You guys all know Doug Marrone. He's the head coach up at Syracuse now. He likes this prospect. He knows what we want here and feels that would be a fit for us. That's the consensus among the coaches and the scouts and then with Marcel Jones from Nebraska. At this point in the draft, we took some height, weight, speed, a guy that had some intangibles we think can lend to our football team."

Carmichael Q: Everybody will want to make comparisons of Andrew Tiller and Marcel Jones to the drafting of players like Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks and Zach Strief in middle to low rounds. Is that fair right now?

Carmichael A: "We're excited about these two guys. We feel like there's a chance for these guys to come in and contribute in some form and whether it's a year or two down the road…To compare them, I don't know if that's fair right now, but we're excited about (having) them."

The good: OL depth was a target and Syracuse G Andrew Tiller fit the bill as a first-team All-Big East selection. The bad: Tiller may be the second consecutive draft pick stretch as he's the No. 25 G and No. 435 overall prospect by The bottom line: Syracuse coach Doug Marrone is a former Saints assistant coach and likely gave a high recommendation on Tiller. It could still be an uphill climb for Tiller to make the team.

Michigan State RB Edwin Baker (round seven, 250th pick) will have a chance to replace backup RB Mike Tolbert (Panthers). Baker rushed for 665 yards and five TDs in 2011. Baker (5-8, 208), however, will not be guaranteed a job. RB Curtis Brinkley, who performed well in Week 8 against the Chiefs last season, should have the inside track. San Diego will also likely sign a free agent RB.

Ballard is a thick rusher who goes about 220 pounds, presenting a bit of overlap with last year's fourth-rounder, Delone Carter. Donald Brown figures to have earned first crack at the starting gig with his (relatively) strong finish to 2011, but those looking to Carter as a sleeper need to worry that Ballard could eat into his (potentially goal-line) touches.
