Syracuse Football GM Nate McNeal leaving for Illinois

sky isn’t falling but this appears to be somewhat of a loss and one that appears to be a step BACK for McNeal

Can someone explain the actual loss here? Just him leaving doesn't mean that it's a material loss. Was the guy well regarded? Was he doing a good job related to Nil, scouting portal candidates or assisting with talking with donors? Honestly didn't hear much about him on this board so really don't know if this is really something to bemoan or just reload and find someone better.

Any number of reasons could be at play, some good for us (us telling him he isn’t a good fit is one example), some bad (he doesn’t want to be here) and some neutral (he’s homesick for a place he’s spent a good portion of his career).

We won’t ever know why. Hopefully we can replace him quickly

So not even a lateral move title wise?

Nope. But he has worked there previously and probably got a pay bump.

Are we sure about that? I was just saying over on the hoops board that "GM" is a terrible title, since people attach the meaning of the position from pro sports to it, but it really isn't that at all.

That Illinois title, "Exec Director of Player Evaluations and Acquisitions", sounds a lot like what I'd expect the SU FB GM to be doing, along with some NIL budgeting stuff.

Agree. The guy who runs the operations side of SU FB is Ryan Kelly. But that’s not a talent position like it is in the NFL.

Every school is different too so the GM wording is going to be confusing unlike professional sports. For us this GM role is more of a recruiting / talent evaluation position as you note. And I suspect we wanted to retain Caporale. It’s a title.

If we’re using NFL terminology, Syracuse has a head coach who is also the GM. Fran Brown runs both sides but nobody is a true GM here but him. Ryan handles the logistics and budgetary piece of it. I suspect that’s the same at most colleges but the terminology confuses folks.

Tommy C coached in FL, went to school at ODU and of course is from NJ.
Seems to have good ties to the hot spots we wait.
Sky is not falling here, congrats to for Nate going home.
As we've seen Fran is well aware of the moves going on and has a plan.
