Syracuse football's expected issues in preseason showed at Maryland (what we learned)

But issues I didn’t expect were the head scratcher.

A lot of the talk about OL problems starts with the absence of Heckel due to injury.
One offensive lineman's absence is actually having this much of an impact?
If true, OL depth is pretty bleak.

Is Heckel going to play this weekend?

when guys are looking in bad spots they end up reacting late. even on that long run the LB has to be leveraged better, but if his eyes were looking in the wrong place and the RB with that speed hits the hole he is in trouble.
Had the 3rd down D been better we get off the field 5-6 more times and its a whole better outcome.

How bad we were on 3rd down was stunning

we really seemed worried about guys running past us to the point we just let them have the underneath stuff. but Jackson really made very few bad throws and many were pretty easy to make.. we might be better off just sending guys and living with the bad plays because the soft zone isnt doing much when they dont play it well..

we couldnt force 2-3 reads by the QBs to even begin letting the DEs get a rush.

I would like to get multiple RB's on the field more like we did once against Liberty and Maryland did against us. Other than jackson, they're probably our best playmakers.

The run seems pretty easy to defend right now because there's no diversity. They basically have to only defend the 1 hole and 2 hole. No stretch plays, no toss sweeps, no bootlegs, no swing passes.

bailey is really doing an outstanding job and improving a lot- this isn't meant to be backhanded because he's always been fine
just heard him on the radio, was great

It's because they were consistently losing 1st and 2nd down, at least in the first half.

Yep, it’s an old obvious cliche but there’s a lot more to defend on 3rd and 2 than 3rd and 8.

It seemed like even on our best 1st down defensive plays, Maryland still gained 4. Everything was forward for them, maybe 1 backwards play in the whole first half? (Although they got away with a blatant grounding on the 2nd drive).

The one thing this article didn’t touch on but CAN be corrected in one week with a big home atmosphere is DL beating their guy. Either to stuff runs or generate pass rush. That ability is still there with this group and can make a huge difference in masking the assignment and communication issues.

He's not Justin Pugh but all indications were that depth was an issue.

I think the bigger issue is not having someone other than Heckel or Serva able to play center. Duerig being injured has hurt us. Vett is not ready at this point.
