I was talking to my (usually) very reliable source yesterday and he made the following comment that I'll paraphrase:

"In practice, the best player on the hoops team is Trevor Cooney."

Understanding that there is some of level hyperbole involved, it's still nice to hear that TC is making an impact. My source also told me that GMAC said that TC is a better shooter as a frosh than he was in his entire career.

Have any insiders heard anything similar/contrary to my sources information?

Not exactly hard to believe. GMAC was never the greatest shooter, just a good shooter who happened to be the most clutch.

you have to remember, practice is TC's games. Practice is practice to the players that actually play games.

Nevertheless, it's still good to hear that Cooney is making some noise in practice! :D Can't wait to see how he does in actual games next year. I've really missed having that big-time sniper in the lineup.

Its kind of shocking to me that we havent gone after a guard for this class knowing that there was a good chance DW would be gone after this year. I honestly think the staff knew this going into this year. Maybe they see how good TC is and are completely comfortable.

It's '13, after BT is gone, when we'll need to bring in another guard. Next year we'll be just fine.

Agreed. Glad they're confident in the talent, I'm still a little worried about the #s though.

Mookie staying on as the very little used 4th guard, basically for emergency situations, is more appealing to me than taking a flyer on someone late in the game. Unless the staff really likes one of the 12 guards that is left.

Redshirting will turn out to be a great choice for Cooney. He can practice against some of the best guards in the country and develop physically (I know that he is already pretty strong for a freshman), and watch alot of games and hopefully catch up to the speed of the game before burning any of his eligibility.

name me years besides this one where we had more than 3 guards play significant minutes

How many teams can barely get their Mcd freshman pg on the court because he's behind 3 really good experianced guards and get to redshirt a top100 guard in the same season? Think about that? What.

Not what worries me. Three guards getting minutes is just fine... so long as all three stay healthy/out of trouble.

That's why I say I'd feel better with more numbers at guard.

that's like saying I'd feel better with Carmelo every year

Uh. No. It's nothing like that.

Look, if other people feel good about running out a squad with only three guards on scholarship that aren't Mookie and aren't a former walk-on, that's great. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that it's probably a good idea to have a fourth though.

Pre-season I doubt anybody really thought Dion would be leaving.

The talk about TC being a great shooter is old news. Members of the team were saying that early this year before he was a redshirt.

I think that unless someone drops in our lap we go with what we have and give Mookie the opportunity to be the emergency rotation guy if an injury occurs. How many years has our deep bench actually included more than three guards?

Top 3 4th
2010-11 Scoop, Triche & Waiters **** Reese
2009-10 Triche, Rautins & Scoop**** Reese
2008-09 Flynn, Devo & Rautins **** Justin Thomas (Scoop - DNP)
2007-08 Flynn, Harris & Scoop ****** ? Devo DNP - 10 games in; Rautins- DNP; J. Wright quit
2006-07 Wright, Devo, Harris(?) ****** Rautins
2005-06 GMAC, Devo, LMAC ********Wright (12.8 mpg) & Rautins (7.9 mpg in only 20 games)
2004-05 GMAC, LMac, Pace (?) *******Edelin (15 mpg in only 20 games) & Wright (8.5 mpg in only 19 games)
2003-04 GMAC, Edelin, Pace (?) *******LMAC - Edelin played in only 17 of 31 games.
2002-03 GMAC, Duany, Edelin ********Pace(?)

Question marks with Harris and Pace because I am not sure whether to consider them guards or forwards. I guess at a minimum they could be considered depth at guard if not a full memeber of the guard rotation. The last three seasons we've played the entire season with a walk on as the fourth guard. Not sure what we had after Devo went down in 07-08, although some might argue that's the argument for having a fourth guard.

Cooney is definitely a good shooter in warm-ups (no defenders), and surprisingly athletic -- gets up and dunks well for a kid his size. Looks like Jimmy Lee as a shooter (know that is only for the age-challenged members of this forum) -- good elevation, perfect form on his jump shot, rarely even catches any rim. You wouldn't want to play HORSE against him.

The question I have -- only because I haven't seen him in an actual scrimmage -- is whether he can handle against a tough defender and get his own shot.

Trever Cooney will be our Jon Deibler.

Dejuan Coleman will be our Jared Sullinger.
TC is far more athletic than Deibler, I think he ends up becoming a decent slasher to go along with his shooting ability.
