I think Marrone is in a situation where every time he plugs a leaking hole over here another plug over there opens up and springs a leak. To his credit when he inherited this program waterfalls were flowing everywhere. He seems frustrated right now because he's done a lot of hard work, and he's very close to success. But getting over the hump is usually a struggle. A lot of programs hover around in mediocrity for decades for a reason.
I believe Marrone will do it mostly because he is willing to adapt. Right now he needs to continue to look at himself and his approach with everyone including the players, the coaches and the media. It's to his credit that he is willing to do that.
A lot of coaches who transition from the NFL to college struggle. It's great that they have the capacity to handle the complexity of the pro game, but the college game is different. When you only have 20 hours a week to work with the players and you are dealing with kids who often times come into the program with a lot less football knowledge at their position than the typical recruits in other parts of the country, this is a very different situation from working in the NFL. Marrone has reduced quite a bit, but these players need attention.
