Thamel article on noel

Wow. Don't even know what to think about all that. Makes your head spin?

Wow. Don't even know what to think about all that. Makes your head spin?

This is a must read.

I'm half-way through the article and I had to pause it's so disturbing.

Our best chance to get Noel is MCW and the early relationship we've built with Noel. He needs to resist all the nonsense that's going on with his recruitment. We'll learn a lot about his character as this comes to an end.

I mean the one kid having to borrow money from drug dealers in order to get plane fare home for christmas just shows how the NCAA needs to do something to help these kids (stipend or the university cover expenses or something). The NCAA is completely out of touch and out of date and is exploiting the kids instead of putting them in a position to be successful.

With a scumbag like Driscoll so involved, it is hard to imagine him going anywhere but Kentucky. Let's hope his parents let Noel actually make the decision. If that happens, he will wear Orange.
Well, there are two mentions in there that should give the NCAA reason to snoop around Kentucky. 1) an low level agent connected to the same firm that represents Calipari is snooping around the kid. 2) Noel took plane rides to UK and Lville during UNNOFFICIAL visits to those schools...and the claim that his dad *cough *cough paid for them.

For the record, Syracuse is a car ride for Nerlens.

Interesting read...scares me a little bit about that kid, is he worth everything that he brings along with him. Really wonder especially when you hear him described as very raw and this season being a lost season for him from a developmental perspective??????

You don't think a cab driver can afford to buy plane tickets to Louisville and Lexington?? It's clear you don't like cab drivers.

"Blalock said he believed that Driscoll sold him to Iowa State, although he stressed he had no proof. When Iowa State fired Eustachy in the spring of 2003, Blalock said, Driscoll instructed him to call the athletic director, Bruce Van De Velde, and say he would attend another university unless Iowa State hired the assistant Wayne Morgan as Eustachy’s replacement. Morgan was hired, Blalock kept his commitment and Blalock said Driscoll visited Ames about four times a season. (A spokesman at Hofstra, where Morgan now works as an assistant, said Morgan could not be reached for comment.) "

Hmmm

Saw that too... Familiar name.

Hmmm

That's the thing that leapt out at me. Sounds like Wayne might have been engaged in some shenanigans; didn't the Rob Johnson troubles occur while Wayne was on our staff?

Also, what's with all these "unassigned" teachers at Noel's old school? Sounds like a make-work program going on over there.

hmm maybe we have a better chance than once thought with Wayne Morgan's buddy and MCW

Someone should tweet this article to the dynamic duo at Yahoo. This story is the work of a real journalist. No unnamed sources. No BS tweets of "Boom!" (because it's really professional to have this attitude when you put a kid through the public ridicule of the point shaving issue at Auburn when he may or may not have done anything)

No wonder Noel spent most of his time at the SU game playing with his Blackberry. He must be a busy cat.

Welcome to big level recruiting. This is how Top 100 recruiting goes down. Understand why NCAA is a joke now?

The article makes the "Calipari pays suitcases of money to players" people look like idiots. Calipari doesn't pay anybody. It's a giant who has who's ears business. I'll give you Anthony Davis NBA contract for a Nerlens Noel commitment, rinse, repeat, every year. This is the amateur athlete loophole. NCAA won't touch it because they are terrified the will lose the slave labor they get for free.

Not directly.

I question he pays anybody indirectly either. Too risky. He created an environment where everybody is paying everybody not in money, but in connections. Like the Davis for Noel trade I mentioned earlier. Agents may pay high school players in money, drugs, girls, whatever they're into so they will attend a certain school. In exchange Calipari will offer that agent one of his top player's NBA contract either directly to the same agent or somebody in the agent's company.

This way Calipari gets off clean. Come on, you don't think somebody would've been caught by now if Calipari was paying players directly or indirectly? As if nobody has their eyes on him.

Even as a Syracuse fan, I have no doubt that my team does the same if it has reached this elite level. There is a reason why we only recruit in certain areas. That's where OUR connections, agents, etc are. I doubt our crap smells like roses.

I have a question. May be stupid, but here goes. Do former players flock back to UK every season to watch them play in Rupp or in the SEC tournament? If Noel wants to be part of a true family and a program and fanbase that has his back even AFTER he leaves, then SU is the only option he has.

The kid needs to kick the leaches to the curb and keep his life less complicated. Although I agree with Bees that we don't need another problem, I don't think Noel is a problem as much as the "agents" that are following him, none of which represent SU.

Although, if he's the recruit that finally brings down Cal and the UK booster club, then I say sign and destroy. He has my blessing.

After reading that article, I don't want to take a chance on the kid for 1 season. Move on, we have enough issues.

It's hard to disagree with you, but examine some of the facts and determine if there is anything shady going on with

1) Noel's parents are Haitian immigrants, so they probably aren't real experienced with the American way, but they have sent two kids on to college to play football, so they do know more than enough about recruiting than the average Joe (that alone scares me with what may or may not be going on).

2) Noel's parents sound like they are hard workers and probably understand that Nerlens is going to make some real big money. It's easy to get greedy. However, his parents are now split up, so I am curious on how the parental influence is with Nerlens. Plus he has been away at prep school for a couple years and traveling all summer playing hoops, so he probably doesn't get a lot of quality time with his parents.

3) I would have to think that Nerlen's brothers would have some influence on his life. I wish the article went a little more in depth about them. I would have liked to hear about their football ability and their recruiting process. See if there is any correlation.

4) There are a lot of guys like Driscoll out there. Some more obvious than others. I would be very embarrassed if I was Providence college. They really screwed up. However, I am sure there are plenty of kids who have played for Driscoll have done nothing illegal or immoral.

5) Not sure why the article got so in depth about Blaylock. I like Thamel, but it seems like he was reaching and stretching for something that might not be there regarding Noel. Plus, a lot of inner city kids have been going away to prep school for a long time and have "adviser's" who guide them. This wasn't Yahoo, but didn't understand how all of that was all connected. Too me, the article seemed very one sided. It's easy to read it and say stay away from him. I'm not convinced yet.

I heard a lot of overseas instead of college talk with Noel a few years ago. Hmmmm I wonder if Driscoll and the agents had something to do with that??????

I think everyone is somewhat skeptical that these things go on everywhere, but Cal takes a lot of heat because of the vacated FF appearances and quite frankly his career is a little sketchy. I mean, what other coach has taken middling programs like Memphis and UMass and suddenly had them recruiting like elite schools? UMass has never recovered, and Memphis has Will Barton, but I think he was a Cal recruit anyway.

All things being equal, what makes a kid suddenly decide Memphis is the place to be when he could go to UNC, Duke, Syracuse, UCLA, Michigan, UK - pretty much anywhere else. Especially if you're implying they all do the same things. Hell, Duke will get your parents cushy jobs, so it must be something more. Is Cal really that much more likable? His street agents are just better connected (i.e. WWW)?

It's a level playing field now because he has the UK brand, and a reputation for delivering one-and-done type players to the NBA - but I would be surprised if there weren't big payments mixed in somehow.
