- This game was low-hanging fruit, easy to grab for the team that could put together 5 minutes of decent ball. But goth teams were in full “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” mode. Notre Dame kept stepping out of bounds. They missed 10 free throws. They had one outside threat, Braeden Shrewsberry. We put our best defensive player, Lucas Taylor on him, Braeden’s teammates were only 2 for 11. But Braeden was 6 for 11. One of them came with Taylor under the basket for some reason and when it went in, Taylor covered his face in shame, knowing he’d blown it. We were lucky they didn’t have their star point guard, Markus Burton.

- Of course, we didn’t have our star, JJ Starling. But we were 0-9 from the three point arc. 2 for 9 and we win. And we missed 8 free throws, including at least two front ends of one and ones that I recall. Chris Bell and Elijah Moore were 0 for 5 from three and scored 9 points. Eddie Lampkin did some stuff but could only play 21 minutes and did little when he was in there in the second half. We used 10 players and seven of them totaled -5 net points.

- I had hoped for a break-out year from Chris Bell but so far he just seems broken. Red only had him in there for 18 minutes and 1 for 5 from the field and 2 for 5 from the foul line. We got the ball with 1:25 left, down 64-67. Chris Bell was not on the court. Jaquan Carlos, who “is not here to score”, missed a jumper. Jayre Davis got the rebound, was fouled and missed the front end of a one-and-one. Bell came back in with 17 seconds left but the three that could have tie it was attempted by Davis. It missed. We got the ball back. That possession ended with a missed lay-up by Lucas Taylor. Who should be taking a three when we are down three in the final seconds?

- Taylor scored 2 points in 29 minutes and his ‘man’, Shrewsberry, scored 25. Taylor had a reputation as a good shooter at Georgia State. He’s 7/33 from the field and 1 for 10 from the arc. Defense is now his specialty, but it was ‘chef’s surprise’ today.

- Moore followed up 19 and 24 point performances with a 4 point performance on 2/6, 0 for 2 from the arc and never got to the line.

- Kyle Cuffe got a serious run and was seriously bad, going 0 for 2 from the field and 1 for 2 from the line with 0 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 0 minutes.

- Chance Westry played 4 minutes but blink and you missed it. His only stat was a foul. Red said they are trying to get him into ‘practice shape’ and then they can try to get him into game shape. By then we’ll be sunning ourselves in the back yard.

- Still one other thing to be disappointed with his Petar Majstorovic, who had been playing pro ball in France, suddenly a world basketball power. He played 1 minute, missed a shot, grabbed a rebound and committed a foul. I thought he might be playing a much larger role by now.

- This very much has the feel of Dino’s 2020 football season: crippling injuries and illnesses and coming up short in too many games. But it wasn’t a harbinger of things to come.
