- We lost and it really looked like we were going to win this one and pass this test. An ill-timed 0-11 run when we had a hard-earned 65-62 lead with 4:51 left.
- We had gained that lead with some of the best passing I can remember from a Syracuse team. Everybody was looking for the open man and the ball rarely hit the floor. Suddenly we were making one-on-one moves that got cut off and Rutgers was making steals and shots at the other end and suddenly we were down 65-73. Then we responded by jacking up 30 footers.
- We had fallen behind by 10 in the first half mostly by missing shots after our ball movement set up some great ones. In the second half we made those shots. Then the ball movement stopped.
- Still the biggest stat in the box score is that we got out-rebounded by 26-43. That makes it very hard to win.
- Our defense was swiss cheese through much of the contest, especially on Ron harper, who scored 26 points on 9 for 13 shooting. He was clearly the best player on the floor. He was kind of burly-looking but moved very well and ahs a complete skill set.
- But our biggest problem on defense was again allowing penetration into the paint way too easily and way too often.
- Joe Girard, after a nice run against Rider, had another terrible shooting game: 1 for 8 from the field, all threes. His shot selection was poor and many of his shots were way off. Buddy will be back on Saturday and I expect to see a lot of Richmond and Boeheim in the backcourt. Right now Joe is playing like the Rex Culpepper of basketball.
- Alan Griffin led us in scoring with 20 points and had half our turnovers, (6).
- I would like to have seen Woody Newton, (9 minutes) get some of Joe’s 34 minutes. He could have helped with the defense and rebounding and he’s actually shooting better than Joe to boot. Dolezaj-Guerrier-Newton-Griffin-Richmond for 30+ minutes wins this game. Dolezaj-Guerrier- Griffin-Richmond- Girard does not.
- Rutgers came in hitting 29% of their three point shots and 55% of their free throws. Against us, they hit 37.5% and 78%.
