The Penn St Dumpster Fire Thread

Fran and Manny Diaz mentioned in The Athletic today:

While there is no guarantee Kraft seeks out other candidates he has worked with before, some within the industry have flagged two possibilities: Duke head coach Manny Diaz and Syracuse head coach Fran Brown, though neither is having the type of season that screams for a big promotion.

Brown is a former assistant at Temple under Rhule (and Kraft) and a New Jersey native with recruiting ties that would absolutely appeal to Penn State. The problem is the Orange have fallen off hard after winning 10 games in Brown’s first season. Syracuse is 3-5, having lost four straight since a win over Clemson in which the Orange lost quarterback Steve Angeli to a season-ending injury.

Brown might have a bright future as a head coach, but a blue blood hiring him coming off a season that fails to even reach a bowl game could be a tough sell.

This is comical. Psu now thinks urban Meyer isn’t qualified to coach there. I really hope they end up with a bottom with a complete disaster. Kraft needs to be fired.
Yeah, it's not as if Ped State has no experience with NIL, nor Meyer cannot learn how to manage NIL matters. At worst, turn over that duty to someone else in the AD to manage. Many schools use a GM to assist/control in this area, anyway. At best a great HC would be in your fold and does just fine.

Keep up the fine decision making, PSU. You are on your way to Rutgers status. O.k. that last part is hyperbole, I am not sure anyone can reach Rutgers status of mismanagement, even UConn has failed to do so and they have been trying for a couple of decades.

The funny thing is that I think they did this for P.R., but it really could backfire badly. If I am Meyer, I find that borderline defamation and motivation to try to get hired somewhere else. What could he possibly have said??? "NIL? What is NIL?" Or: "Well, this is Penn State. I assume we have the ability to outspend everyone every year and not have to worry about making mistakes. We would, right?"

Why not just say... "We met, but there was not much mutual interest at this time." Suppose Auburn hires Meyer and he wins another title or just wins more than Penn State. Especially, if PSU ends up with Matt Campbell or Manny Diaz. Brohm to Penn State might be a win for Penn State though... plus a win for us if Louisville needs to start over.

I almost wonder if this was smoke screen because meyer wanted a big number they couldn’t do. The nil excuse is bs.

You really don’t understand defamation. 1) it’s a reporter providing information received from others. 2) What was provided were opinions of a prospective employer after an interview. 3) In general, opinions are not actionable. 4) He’s a public figure, so it would have to be said with intentional malice.
The reporter would have to know that this is false, and have run with the story with the intent to cause harm to Meyer. Then the issue would be, what the heck are his damages? $0.00. His reputation is already shite!

Point 4 showing some signs of wobble.
