The refs and announcers

I can’t even say there were bad calls except for the targeting but the officiating to me was very strange. Tons of penalties on UVA in the first half and tons of penalties on us in the second. It’s not like we committed none in the first and they cleaned it up in the second. Overall it was probably close but it didn’t feel consistent.

The knee down non-overrule seemed wrong but couldn't hear explanation

Refs were fine. Announcers were horrid. Too busy talking to notice a fumble. Mentioned multiple times that shrader had 2 picks. Heard other times where they just had a stat wrong. Like you have a team for this stuff. Still better than the UConn game

Can someone explain to me why that sack in the end zone wasn’t a safety? From where we were sitting in the upper deck it looked like a slam dunk safety and I couldn’t hear the explanation as to why it was ruled a sack.
Apparently the qb has to move himself into the endzone for it to become a safety because he was pulled into the endzone from the 1 yd line it then wasn’t a safety. I think it’s stupid but whatever at this point.

Every time I watch a game lately I realize how much more I have to learn it feels! But thanks for this explanation, everyone in our section was livid.

Why did they put it at the 3? Frankly I thought Armstrong was trying to pull away from Caleb and backed into the end zone to do it.

Forward progress. If you’re pulled backwards, you don’t lose the point you gained prior

It was a safety. QB pulled away from the would be tackler then tripped over him/got re tackled in the end zone. Had he not pulled away ball should have went to the 1 1/2, but he did and the 3 yard line spot was never the correct option regardless of potential outcomes.

They blew the safety call.

And based on the two targeting calls they made the third one should’ve been targeting as well. I don’t understand how that one was different than the others.

The Knee-Down "Catch" just has to go down as one of the great anomalies of American Life...

No question his knee was on the turf and helped him "access" the ball...it definitely hit his hands and was in his "possession" with his knee on the ground...BUT he hadn't completed the catch when his knee was lifted up off the ground?

I mean totally absurd and one of those subjective things that they'll save if they ever need a call to save Alabama or Ohio State, for instance.

How can you have forward progress when you never moved forward?
It’s the way the rule is written. He was hit at the half yard line, that marks the forwardness of his progress.

I don’t write the rules. ‍♂️

I couldn't find a rule that covered this, (forward progress when a quarterback is moving backwards). Do you have a link? Also, why did they place it at the 3?

It’s where first contact was made. No different than a receiver coming back to catch a ball and even though he is running back towards the line of scrimmage they put the ball where he was first contacted

First contact was not made at the three. And the quarterback never moved forward. He was on his feet, trying to avoid the tackle, which came in the end zone.

What else could it be: otherwise pick the QB up and carry him into the endzone

First contact was at the two and defender never let go of qb.

...who stayed on his feet until he was tackled in the end zone.
I understand he stayed in his feet, but it is placed where he was first contacted. Had the defender let go of him and then he was tackled in end zone would be a safety
