As of 10/16/11, these are the undefeated teams left in Division 1A/FBS college football. (The BCS standings are out now and since they, not the writer‘s or coach’s poll determine who gets into the national championship game, I‘ll just quote the BCS ranking from here on in.)

Teams in BCS automatic qualifying conferences:

LOUISIANA STATE 7-0 (269-82) is ranked #1
Their remaining opponents:
10/22 Auburn #20 (5-2)
10/29 BYE
11/5 at Alabama #2 (7-0)
11/12 Western Kentucky (2-4)
11/19 at Mississippi (2-4)
11/25 Arkansas #9 (5-1)
They have three remaining games against ranked teams and three against teams with winning records. They play one undefeated team and one one loss team. Their league has a championship game.

ALABAMA 7-0 (278-49) ranked #2
Their remaining opponents:
10/22 Tennessee (3-3)
11/5 Louisiana State #1 (7-0)
11/12 at Mississippi State (3-4)
11/19 Georgia Southern (6-0)
11/26 at Auburn #20 (5-2)
They have two remaining games against ranked teams and two against undefeated teams. One of those is LSU. The other is Georgia Southern, the #1 ranked FSC school which has won six national championships on that level. If Alabama beats LSU it could be the #1 FBS team vs. the #1 FCS team. They have three games remaining against teams with winning records. Their league has a championship game.

Their remaining opponents:
10/22 Texas Tech (4-2)

Comment: It was the bonfire of the vanities as Michigan, Illinois and Georgia Tech all fell from the ranks of the unbeaten teams. Meanwhile the one loss teams are looking more formidable. At the end of the month I’ll add them to the list. It still looks like the title game will be the Alabama-LSU winner vs. either the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State winner or, if someone can knock that winner off ahead of time, Wisconsin, (who I think might actually be the country’s best team), Stanford and if the bonfire continues, Boise State. Kansas State is unlikely to be in the national title picture but they are the best bet to upset the applecart for the Oklahoma teams because they play them in consecutive weeks. Clemson and Houston will be spectators no matter what they do. If a team at this stage has three digits in their “points allowed”, they are an unlikely national champion. That would be Oklahoma State, Clemson, Kansas State and Houston and Oklahoma is close.

Remaining games between undefeated teams:

10/29 Oklahoma at Kansas State
11/5 LSU at Alabama and Oklahoma State at Kansas State
12/3 Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
Here are the games between undefeated teams and those dangerous-looking one loss teams:
10/22 Wisconsin at Michigan State, Washington at Stanford
10/29 Stanford at Southern California, Clemson at Georgia Tech
11/12 Oregon at Stanford
11/19 Wisconsin at Illinois, Southern Methodist at Houston
11/25 LSU at Arkansas
11/26 Penn State at Wisconsin, Clemson at South Carolina
