- Fran Brown, in his first year, has given us our third 8 win regular season of the century and will go for 10 in the bowl game. Our supposedly weak non-conference schedule contained no power conference team but Ohio U., UNLV, Holy Cross and Connecticut went a combined 33-15 and we beat all four of them. We lost three conference games but finished ahead in the standings of all three teams in the standings, a downside as it suggests we should have been 12-0, in the ACC title game and in the national championship tournament, (has anybody called it ‘the Big Dance’ yet?), but an upside in that that’s how good Fran Brown’s first team here was. It might be tough to live up to this year, but Fran wouldn’t want it to be any other way.
- We’ve overcome deficits of 3-21 against old rival Virginia Tech and 0-21 against old rival Miami. You can do that with a great passer at QB. Miami coach Mario Cristobal correctly observed that “when it was a contested throw, (the Syracuse receivers) got the ball about 80% of the time”. And that was 7 different guys. But McCord has a knack of delivering the ball where his guy is the most likely to wind up with the ball, so comes back to #6. The top 4 ACC receivers:

...played in this game. Three of them were our guys. When have we ever see that?
- Don’t get between LeQuint Allen and the goal line. It’s won’t be pleasant. We’ve had a bunch of very productive runners here over the years, (and I’ve never figured out why our passing doesn’t set him up for a better average per carry than 4.3 or the 3.7 he had in this game.
- But you don’t make comebacks just on offense. You make them on defense first. You’ve got to stop the other team from scoring ir you won catch them. Our defense was totally overmatched in Miami’s first three possessions. Then the offense scored. That only made it 7-21 but it dramatically increased the energy level on the team and the defense rose up to match the offense. They got three straight 3 and outs. It was 14-21 at the half and we tied it up in our first possession of the second half. We duked it out on even terms the rest of the way and came out ahead. Those three straight 3 and outs had as much to do with the comeback at the touchdowns we scored.
- All hail Devin Grant! He made the play of the game. It brought memories of this play to our minds, but Grant’s was far more important as it got us to 9-3, not 5-7:
- People talk about great games against Miami in the Dome in the past. They might not include the dream-sequence 1998 game where we annihilated the Canes 66-13. This game, after the 0-21 start, was actually closer to that game than any of the others. 42-17.
- Fran had 300 recruits there – 300! They got an eyeful and an earful. We will be a different team next year but we could be as good or better because of an overall increase in talent, depth, size and speed, even if we’ve lost some outstanding individuals. And Fran will get them ‘DART’.
- People will remember that we were 4-1 in November.
9-3 with 1 to go
LET’S GO ORANGE !!!!
