The Upside
- After losing 13 of 16, five in a row and 5 in a row in the Dome to these guys, we finally beat them.
- We are still #1. If we can beat Notre Dame on Saturday, we will have been ranked #1 for 7 weeks in a row, topping the 1989-90 team which was #1 for 6 weeks in a row.
- We are 20-0 for the first time in program history, although we had winning streaks of 21 and 23 in a row in the Edmund Dollard era, (1911-1924). The 2003 team won only those last 6 games in a row, having lost to Connecticut in the BET and the dropped the opener the next year to Charlotte.
- We are exactly half way to 40-0, which would be our record if we really did run the table. It’s not very likely but we still get to dream about it.
- We almost matched their 0-19 run of last year with a 13-0 run to start the game. I really wanted to get to 20, but you can’t have everything.
- After most of that lead, and some other leads we had built back up, (33-21, 48-34), we made the plays down the stretch to win the game. I hope Paul Harris was watching.
- We had two players with double-doubles. Fab Melo, battling those tough Pitt inside players, had 10 points and 10 rebounds while Scoop Jardine had 12 points and 10 assists. One more assist in the second Providence game and he would have had two straight double-doubles and three in five games. He seems to be playing in the knowledge that he doesn’t have to do everything himself, a good attitude for a point guard to have.
- Brandon Triche quietly had a strong game with 12 points 3 assists, 2 steals and no turnovers on 19 minutes. And he was in there at the end, making 6 of 7 free throws to ice. I love scoop but I prefer Dion and Brandon at the end of games, Dion for his offensive versatility and explosiveness, Brandon for his free throw shooting.
- We think of CJ Fair as that guy who is always in the right place at the right time. It was a revelation to see him turn at the foul line, take two steps and T-bag a Pitt defender on one of the best dunks I’ve ever seen. He’s in tune with his inner Hakim Warwick.
- We also caught a glimpse of the future with Fab Melo making a similar move but not getting to the basket because, (IMHO) he was undercut. The refs called a charge, unfortunately. They did the same on one of Dion’s increasingly Jordaneque moves where he kissed a finger-roll off the glass.
- We actually won this game from the line, going 20 for 23, (87%) while they went 12 for 25 (52%). Nasir Robinson was 2 for 8. 20-12: there’s your 8 points.
- Brian Barrett made a great point in the post game show last night: the teams that have had the most success against our zone this year are the teams that had a guy who could operate in the high post: shoot from there or pass it inside or back out. Providence had Batts. Marquette had Crowder. Pittsburgh had Robinson. We don’t play any of those teams again in the regular season. He went over the rosters of the teams we do play and said that none of those teams have that kind of player.
20-0 and 20 to go….. Impossible is nothing!!!!
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
