- We didn’t have Fab Melo. We shot 4 for 20 from outside. We were out-rebounded by 21. And we only lost by -2.
- Another visit to the Dome for West Virginia- another defeat. This was lot harder than the football game. But we’ve done pretty well against them in basketball. We’ve now won 13 of 14 vs. the Mounties. They haven’t beaten us in the Dome since 1996. Jim lost his first game to Bob Huggins but is 5-0 since.
- Everybody else was missing but Brandon Triche came through for us, until he finally missed on a couple late shots and even then he hit a couple of big free throws late. He scored 12 second half points, including our first five. He loves playing against the Mountaineers- he now has 50 points in three games against them.
- Kris Joseph filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 7 rebounds, (he was the one guy who seemed interested in getting rebounds), 3 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. He also found his stroke at the free throw line with a 5 for 5 performance after 1 for 5 at Cincinnati. He sure gets it up high but it comes down soft.
- Baye Keita and Rak Christmas seem to be alternating good and bad games. This was a Baye game with 4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks and a steal. He stood up to the hulking Deniz Kilici, who out-weighted him by about 50 pounds, using his long arms to discourage that big hook shot. The big Turk went 2 for 10 on the evening, 9and 1 for 5 from the foul line). As long as one of big men is playing well, I guess we’re OK. But two would be nice.
- Scoop Jardine wasn’t spectacular but had 9 points and 5 assists. He is spectacular, however when going up for last shots. For the third time in recent games, he hit a three in the final seconds of the first half. We’ve traditionally been brutal holding for a last shot but the combination of Dion driving to the basket and passing back out to a wide-open Scoop has bee=come a weapon.
- I thought this was one of our best defensive games, with the job Keita did on Kilcili, 7 blocks, 11 steals, 6 other turnovers by West Virginia and several shot clock violations forced. We also used the press effectively. As Matt Park pointed out, Louisville uses the press not just to steal the ball or control tempo but to limit the amount of time the other team has to run their half-court offense. We did that in this game. We definitely won this game one the defensive end.
- All through the game I had a strange calmness, as if I knew we were going to win no matter what was happening on the court. It was more than just confidence in a team that had won 21 of 22 games. I just somehow knew we would win.
22-1 and 17 to be done….. Impossible is nothing!!!!
LET’S GO ORANGE!!!
