As much as zeitgeist would seem appropriate, it's actually quite stunning how a program can plunge from the zenith of college basketball in such a short and dramatic fashion. One has to wonder if Calhoun will return to coach what's left after the exodus is over.

Drummond, Lamb going pro
Oriakhi, Bradley transferring
Calhoun, Evans joining
Any other roster transactions?

They also got Holy Cross PG RJ Evans for a year and Michael Bradley transferred out today, too.

Ah, forgot those two. Will add them to the transaction log.

Solution found! Install revolving doors on Gampel Pavillion! What problem, no problem here, move along.

UConn will be fine in the future. They are going to have a tough 2012-2013 season but the program has won 3 NCs since 1999 and has a lot of players in the NBA. While I don't like the program because of our rivalry they will get a good coach to replace Calhoun and will be a constant top 20 team even after we leave for the ACC. So no need to pour gasoline on the fire for them. They will be pretty bad in 2012, but I wouldn't expect the program to go down in flames. If we had 3 NCs since 1999 Mantonio would pronounce us to be the greatest program of all-time I want 2 more NCs.

Dont count out calhoun , somehow , someway they will still compete and who knows i wouldnt be surprised if the post season ban is lifted next season once he works his magic.
Well they lose Jeremy Lamb, Alex Ohriaki, Michael Bradley and Andre Drummond. They gain Omar Calhoun and RJ Evans. They were a 9 seed last year.

It would be a hell of a coaching job by Calhoun to get that team to the tourney if they somehow became eligible.

Calhoun is not the kind of guy to walk away from the program he built and leave it in a shambles. Love him or hate him, he is a fighter. He'd rather die on the job than leave it like this, I'd wager.

NYU, San Francisco, CCNY, and UNLV say hi.

Uconn is a coach program. I mean to some extent so are we but at least we have other things going for us to maintain a high level of play. There really is no reason to think they're going to be good after JC leaves. They have no legit replacement lined up, their faciliries are a joke, and they are going to play in C-USA part 2.

If we had 3 NCs since 1999 Mantonio would pronounce us to be the greatest program of all-time I want 2 more NCs.

They are supposed to start building a new basketball training facility shortly. They got some huge donations this past year.

So you got one thing going for you at least.

I'm sure - but easier said than done...

Folks were saying the same thing about UMASS back in the day after Cal carpetbagged it out of town before the hammer came down... and UMASS never recovered to the same level of that final 4 Camby team...

So you got one thing going for you at least.

I'll believe it's actually true when they put shovel to ground. Until then it's just "in the plans." Just wanted to point out that it was "in the plans."

First off its freaking 2012 not the 1960's. UNLV is a pretty damn good program. Your insulting of UConn as a coach program is wrong. While Calhoun has built that program all programs at one point had to be built up. They have started a 10 million dollar facility on their campus similar to our Melo Center. I can't stand the UConn program as much as anyone due to our rivalry, but your post is a joke. I mean seriously they have no legit replacement set up? So what they have won the most NCs since 1999 in the entire country I can't stand their guts, but they will get a good coach to replace Jim Calhoun my god. EastCoast brings up Shaka Smart to replace Calhoun. While I love Syracuse basketball we can't throw stones when we live in a glass house. Butler has been to consecutive final 4s and yet we act like we are a true blue blood program yet Calhoun and Boeheim have been to same amount of Final 4s and UConn has 3 titles while we have 1 when we could have had another without luck. However, CCNY, and San Francisco say hi.

remember what happened to us after our national championship ... 2 nits...
so be careful about throwing stones

UConn needs Shaka Smart alot more than he needs them. That said, the next 2-3 years are massive for UConn basketball.

I personally don't mind but I was thinking about some of the ways UConn has been described here and I'm just perplexed.

"Going down in flames", "Self-destructing", etc.

It's going to depend much more on Calhoun and his replacement (whenever that is) than any of the stuff that has happened so far.

I swear no other fan base is as sensitive about criticising a rival than Syracuse WRT Uconn. It's like you're insulting someone's mother with some people.

I'm not really sure what the time period has to do with anything but going back more recently UMASS was a power in the late 80's to 90's. Of course they fell off as well once Cal bolted for the Nets. Another coach program, it would seem.

By the way, I'm not "insulting" Uconn by referring to them as a "coach program." That's what they are. Jim Calhoun is pretty much where it begins and ends as far as Uconn basketball tradition is concerned. But that's OK, to an extent Syracuse is as well. We're just in a better position longterm, IMO.

I'm sure you recognize that UNLV, while a solid mid major, is probably not setting up for another undefeated season anytime soon. Anderson Hunt is not walking through that door.

The facility issue was already addressed. Yeah it's great but shovels aren't in the dirt yet.

Shaka Smart? He went to a final four with Anthony Grant's players. If you want to put the long term success of your program in the hands of a guy who has a two year long track record then be my guest.

I'm not sure what your're driving at witht he rest of your post.

The postseason ban and the state of the Big East are pretty significant.

How is Hopkins any more of a sure thing than Smart? Yeah, Hop has been around the program forever, but Smart has proven he can be a very good HC at this level.

He's not.

But we're going to the ACC. And we have a Melo Center. And the Dome.

It was 1 NIT the year before the NC
