Sure there are some scheme/coaching issues but I see this all over the country. What i saw tonight from a talent standpoint was easy.
USF has safeties have the size of our linebackers. I love Shamarko and Phil but they are tiny. The USF safeties looked liked DDavis out there. Our linebackers are tiny. Spruill and Vaughan got eaten up inside tonight. Spruill is undersized and lineman have their way with him. He's been pretty much non existant for awhile now. They're all getting pushed around. It's no slight on them, they are what we have. Spruill is not a MLB but he's the best inside we have. The other guys are either small, short or young.
Our DB's I think are ok. The catch tonight was a great play but Anderson was there. These guys have been fine.
Our safeties are huge hitters but woefully undersized. The Dtackles are ok but young. Our ends are fine but sometimes I wonder what the assignment is.
Do we not play assignment football against the wildcat? Doesn't seem like it - this is a coaching issue I believe. Why against a running QB team do we bite on the inside handoff repeatedly? and then our guys are like oh when the QB keeps the ball and runs outside?
Offensively Nassib has issues with pocket presence and gets happy feet. It doesn't seem to be changing except tonight he actually looked to run the ball. That to me is a coaching change whereby they've finally told him to run it when things break down - they must not worried about him getting hurt at this point. He does panic and hasn't learned to step up in the pocket. WR's I don't believe are open in the time he has. Plays take to long to develop. He doesn't have good pocket presence or awareness which compounds the problem. Anyhow, he has his faults but he's the best QB we've had since probably Nunes.
We might have running QB in the wings but it won't do much good if the kid can't throw the ball, it's a catch 22.
The line I haven't figured out. Is it the runs up the middle that makes them look bad? I don't know, they seem to give Nassib time to throw. The overall ground game is just not there though. Is it the line, the backs or the play calling? I've never seen so many runs between the tackles though. Not sure what the love affair is there.
Bailey seems slower to me this year. A product of weight or too many carries I'm not sure. He's not displaying good vision or awareness like he had in the past either. I wonder if it's because he's been stuffed between the tackles so much. Anyhow, me thinks he's just not being utilized right. In pass protection his blocking is good one play and the next. They need to teach the younger RB's how to block. I have to believe someone Jerome Smith's size can take on a blitzing LB. Bailey got killed tonight trying to chip a guy twice his size.
The WR are decent players they are just not big enough or physical enough. Note the USF (and most of the Big East wide receivers are bigger than our DBs and Safeties. Our WR's are the same size or smaller than the D.
I don't think the players are helped by the play calling on O, I expect Marrone to make a change there. The 'bunch' formation drives me insane - it's almost as bad as the pistol in the mouth formation.
Anyhow, sorry for the rant, the coaches need to improve some things but I still believe they are getting everything they can out of what they have. MOST everybody we're lineing up against have bigger faster players across the board and it's why we need to recruit recruit recruit.
