Were #1

I prefer to be #1 in the rankings at the end of the season. That's all that counts, really. Nice to get some recognition like this along the way, but, in the end, it's meaningless if we don't win the NCAAs. Seems like I remember that we weren't ranked in the Top 25 in 2002-2003 until February. And, we all know how that turned out.

The original post was talking about a statistical ranking, not the top 25. It's really gotten out of hand, anytime anyone posts any form of ranking whatsoever, someone feels the need to say all that matters is being #1 at the end of the season.

Enjoying the journey is apparently no longer allowed for Syracuse hoops fans...the season is by definition a complete failure if we don't win the championship. People happy with the Final Four run last year? Losers that don't really get that all that matters is winning the championship.

As to the original question, I wouldn't have expected us to be anywhere close to the best offensive efficiency at this point of the season after the first few games. It does feel like this is a team that is getting better every week.

he is talking about our offensive efficiency... our offense was God awful the first 4 games.

I was worried.

If there were only six games a year it would suck.

I want them to be #1 in everything from October through April. KenPom, AP, coaches, power rankings, BPI, etc.

And when they are #1 in something, I will celebrate that. What I won't do is give up on the team for the season if they aren't ranked highly in the early months. I think that sentiment has morphed into the rankings don't matter early posts. They do matter, but the early ones aren't always indicative of how well a team plays in March.

Think about the fact that we routinely get almost nothing in transition and are constantly asking for more offense from our big guys, yet this is clearly one of the best half court offensive teams we have fielded in quite some time. Every close game against good competition late in the 2nd half we execute and separate then they are forced to foul our good FT shooters after that and we salt the game away. I often remember worrying about tight games in the NCAA and half court scoring by our team in those games. That's not a concern this year.
