What do you think are the 3 things that most negatively affected SU football in the last 25 years

1. Paul Pasqualoni getting shot in a less humane way than Fredo Corleone
2. Mike Vick not coming to Syracuse.
3. Losing to Temple in 2004. Win and they are heading to a BCS game. You always take your chances getting into that game and seeing what happens. If we win, P stays through 2005, Ray Rice shows up and potentially 2005 isn't a 1 win season.

This is so brutal and probably true. A doinked extra point was the difference if memory serves. Yikes.

Temple kicked our ass in 2004. We were their only FBS win that season.

Walter Washington ran the same play over and over and we couldn't stop him. 29 carries for 185 yards and 3 TD's.

1) Jake staying too long.
2) Gross getting hired
3) Martine leaving

jake should have stayed longer. SU isn’t Syracuse without him. He should have found a way to bring
In a younger visionary as an understudy.

Reactions: cto
  • The neglect from the administration. Spanned two Chancellors.
  • Hiring Greg Robinson. Daryl Gross lifted the Olympic sports which are important from a fundraising perspective especially with the well to do alumni, but set back the program that matters most to a University's athletic department.
  • Doug Marrone leaving when the program was building something. University went with a stopgap in Shafer and look what that got the program.

1) The resurgence of Rutgers
2} UConn becoming a Division 1 player
3} The Dome and other facilities aging out
One would have to have an original “surge” in order to “resurge.” Buttgers was the brief beneficiary of a) BE being decimated; b) SU not investing in FB, and c) bad coaching.
YuCon effected SU not one bit. (See sentence #1.)
If by facilities, you mean practice facilities, etc, okay. Dome aging did not effect the above.

Chancellor Shaw and the Board of Trustees failing to invest in the program. Facilities were way behind and the handling of Coach P was disrespectful (Cantor & Gross). Gross hiring Robinson set the program back 15 years.

The investment stuff never became a problem until a really bad hire was made. I think the impact GERG had is somewhat overrated because other schools have made TERRIBLE hires (Dan Henning at BC comes to mind) and have figured a way to cut the loss and make a decent hire after. We laugh at Tom O'Brien but he stabilized BC when they had (drum roll) TERRIBLE facilities similar to Syracuse (probably worse). The GERG hire was a 0 out of 10. The rope they gave him (Gross and Cantor) was infinitely worse. Schools could get away with crappy resources at the time not bad decisions left bad

Lack of investment in the physical plant of the program.

Cheaping out on coaching budget/salary.

Absence of major donors and fundraising problems in general.
totally agree with all of that,---lastly, the weather.

The question is the last 25 years. Can’t blame Greg Robinson for the current state. Historically Joe Paterno did more damage to the program. Not recruiting Ray Rice,Mike Hart,Greg Paulis,Latavius Murray , Stevie Scott and Mike Vick hurt more than any coaching hire.

We recruited Mike Vick, and even got a commitment from him (for two days), until his HS coach got a bag from Va Tech.

We recruited Ray Rice, and even got a commitment from him, until Shady and Rice's girlfriend got in his head.

We recruited Mike Hart, but he grew up a Michigan fan. Was never happening.

We recruited Latavius Murray, but he wanted to play in FLA closer to his father. Was never happening.

We recruited Stevie Scott, but he wanted to get out of town for school.

Who did Greg Paulus play college football for again?

You're 0 for 6.

We recruited every one of those players. Every single one.

Edit: Oops - just saw OX's post.

What he said.
