Are we better off now than we were then?
No Steve we aren't, and it's both the Universities, and the Networks fault.
What would have been best if all the schools had gotten together and dealt with the Networks as a group.
Then they could have set the parameters for money and games to be shown.
That way they would have held the power, as it turned out it became a free for all which ceded all control to the Networks.

I would say no to both. For the former the yes is just a mirage.
 
If better is measured from the perspective of the colleges controlling their path in athletics then yes.

Certain colleges controlling the path of the rest is more accurate. Thus really it’s the same outcome either way.
