Overall Game Total: Syracuse 79 Duke 104

Comments: That game was like a boxing match. I've always felt sorry for the loser in a boxing match because not only have you lost but you've gotten beaten up to boot. We lost and we got beaten up.

But our defense didn’t get steamrolled quite as much as it looked. We stuffed 19 of 34 first down runs for 3 yards or less. Second and third down were more damaging to us (9-20 total on runs). Duke proved that doing the same thing over and over again is not insane if it produces better results as you go along. Our horrendous third down performance (2-9) kept giving the ball back to Duke so they could keep pounding away.

People always want us to pass more on first down. We did in this game, passing 15 times and running only 7 times on first down. After establishing the run vs. Georgia tech and using that to set up the pass, we made no attempt to do so in this game. First down is the easiest down to pass on because defenses are geared to stop a run. Our first seven first down pass attempts produced one completion for one yard and then 6 straight incompletions.

We began our drives, on average, at our 29 with a total of 998 yards to score, (in 14 possessions). Duke started at it’s 26 with 956 yards to go, (in 13 possessions). Our normal advent age in this stat was muted because our takeovers, with one big exception, tended to come in our territory and stop Duke drives rather than setting up scoring opportunities for SU.

This was a strange game. We were +4 in turnovers, which usually means not only victory but a rout. But they were +335 in rushing yards, which means the same thing. The result was a game that was actually close and very winnable throughout, even though we were getting beaten up. If we’d have kicked that field goal in the second quarter and if the refs hadn’t gone for the acting job of their missed field goal on the following possession, where they later scored a touchdown, that’s a 10 point swing right there. We dropped at least 4 passes that could have bene first downs or touchdowns. I remember an early run by Sean Tucker in which he was breaking away but a wide receiver blocked his man into Sean rather than away from him. Then there were the two dropped interceptions. In both cases, the flow of the play was away from the direction Trill Williams and Mikel Jones were running in order to catch the ball. It’s easy to imagine Trill going all the way to score and perhaps Mikel might have bene able to do so as well. How different would our current rhetoric have been if even 2-3 of those plays went out way?

Of course any time your opponents punted once, you probably lost.

So this game wound up 79-104 in plays won, -25. The most similar games of the Babers era:
2016: Syracuse 95 South Florida 116 = -21 We lost 20-45
2016: Syracuse 72 Wake Forest 101 = -29 We lost 9-28
2017: Syracuse 80 Louisiana State 103 = -23 We lost 26-35
2019: Syracuse 78 North Carolina State 100 = -22 We lost 10-16
