"Plan A" is pretty good:

- pressure man to man defense
- generate steals/turnovers for offense (fast break, etc)
- dribble penetration, iso offense...get to the FT line

of course, the team is limited a bit by the strengths of the roster...but credit to the players and coaches for developing a hardnosed defensive style and working hard every game. the identity of the team has come together pretty well.

However, imo, Plan A...only reliably works against Quad 2 and lower. They havent shown this style can actually get the job done vs top tier squads.

Against the upper echelon, those teams can take away Plan A - they can stop dribble drives, they can score despite the pressure and they can take care of the ball (Duke was the perfect example, but UVA and others have shown the blueprint, as well)

this team needs a Plan B.

so what is it?

I dont think the defense needs to change much...but they will need to get better on switches and pick and roll and help defense, overall.

the biggest issue is offense. what happens when a team takes away dribble drive? so far, a whole lot of nothing...

my suggestions:

- this team needs to run plays - what do you do when the driving doesnt work and players arent beating their man?
- need to do whatever it takes to start getting the shooters involved...and open looks from 3
- the starting guards need to shoot from deep...stop being so shy and protecting percentages
-JJ needs more volume...hes deferred way too much overall, imo...needs to take over like he did vs gtown.
- this team always plays better on offense when they get assists...need to run plays and start using ball movement better...esp once they get a lead they start just jacking up anything
- can use the post better on offense: post up guards, pass to post then pass out for 3...even if just to help with spacing and keep defenses honest. need to have an answer for teams that pack the paint and take away the drives.
- there are many mouths to feed and sometimes a player hits a few shots then disappears - gotta feed the hot player...overall do a pretty decent job with shot selection and sharing the ball...but could still be way better ...quadir should never lead the team in 3pt attempts in any game, for example.
- perhaps an issue with this team is that they actually arent good at running plays - idk...but i really think they need to introduce some new offensive sets somehow...get creative and stop relying on 1 on 1 offense - its like the exact same offense as JB had. and its not working (against quad 1 teams)...once in a while they get an easy bucket and make it seem so effortless...i really think they are capable of doing this more often.

Less Bell and Taylor, Bell doesn't rebound, pass or play defense. Taylor can't score fair on defense, and rebounds, both should see limited minutes in future games.

A big problem is JJ and Mintz are ball stoppers. It’s hard to get players to move when the ball is sticking in guys hands.

You have to play them both, but you have to split them up. Put one with Copeland and the other with Benny, and they'll both be better, and we'll have better offensive spacing, because we'll have a guy who can get their own shot with a 3 point shooter.
