My brother, who lives in Hawaii sent me these links with this note:

"Meanwhile, something different for you "mainlanders" to see, the Eddie Aikau Quicksilver surf meet at Waimea Bay on the North Shore here, where waves have to be 40 foot faces or more so it has only been held seven times in 30 years, all in honor of a lifeguard and champion surfer who tried to rescue the sinking Hokule`a voyaging canoe replica in its early days in the 1970s and paddled off miles toward shore but was lost at sea. The expression Eddie Would Go has become a motto since then of surfers challenging the big waves (you can access more footage of the surf meet at #eddiewouldgo if you are interested). Awesome waves this year, up to 60 feet at times, and a 23 year old North Shore native (but with blue eyes and blonde hair), John John Florence, won with three successful rides on enormous waves, coming out of the white foam on his board every time."

Surfing a 60 foot wave must be like falling out the window of a 6 story building and being immediately hit by a tsunami.

I enjoyed Mavericks, but someone did a great history of surfing documentary, which was terrific. It started with the long boards and ended with the surfing they are doing with jet skis.
