My brother sent me this link to George Carlin's famous routine on the subject:

Here's one version of George's classic routine on baseball vs. football, DC

I sent him back these links:

It inspired Thomas Boswell to do this:

Three years later Richard Rosenthal tried to answer him but could only come up with 40 reasons why football was better than baseball, (Boswell had 99).

Both lists would need some revising if they were re-done today.

Football has hoodwinked America. Its 12 minutes of action crammed into 3.5 hours of commercials.

Yeah, I love it when football fans say baseball doesn't have enough action.

The difference is football has 16 games of no action while baseball has 162

i think one big issue is most people dont even notice the action that goes on in a single baseball play. i wonder if you added up all the time in a game how much real action goes on in either to compare..

of course basketball is not seen as having dead time, but if you watch SU games you see 25 secs of 2 guys passing and 10 of a play actually being run.

The last two minutes of basketball games are unbearable. It's gotten to the point that I deliberately delay watching so I can DVR and fast forward through timeouts.

In one of his few astute observations, George F. Will notes that football "... has everything that's wrong with America, periods of extreme violence punctuated by committee meetings."
