Impact attack Nick Piroli 'dropped out of the sky' for Syracuse men's lacrosse (PS: Kramer)

The dream of Nick Piroli and the needs of the Syracuse University men's lacrosse team are converging at just the right moment.

A spot in the Orange lineup had been the prize of Piroli's eyes since his days at Carthage High School. But he wasn't quite high enough on the recruiting priority list of Syracuse coach John Desko at the time, so Piroli took the not-so-bad consolation prize of a chance to play at Brown.

Four year later, things look a lot different on both sides. Piroli developed his game at Brown and Syracuse was looking for some help at attack. The two puzzle pieces have been a perfect fit this season...

Revamped Syracuse men's lacrosse 'not even thinking about national championships' (PS: Kramer)

Syracuse University men's lacrosse coach John Desko has collected five NCAA Division I titles in his 17 seasons running the Orange.

The last one landed on his shelf in 2009, which might as well have been a generation ago in the view of many famished Orange fans who think the span between hardware is already too long. That impatience is fed by the royalty status created by the school's 11 championships overall, more than any other program in the sport.

But on the long list of expectations and concerns running through Desko's head in advance of Saturday's season-opener against visiting Siena, the possible raising of that trophy at the end of 2016 is at the very bottom right now...

Siena at No. 5 Syracuse
  • When: 1 p.m.
  • Last meeting: Feb. 7, 2015 – Syracuse won 21-7
  • MLL Draft Picks: Dylan Donahue (2nd overall – Charlotte Hounds), Brandon Mullins (9th overall, Boston Cannons), Warren Hill (36th overall, Atlanta Blaze), Tim Barber (48th overall, Denver Outlaws)
  • Watch: ESPN3
Saturday marks our first official glimpse of the new-look Syracuse Orange, as the team works to replace seven of last year’s starters, including five on the offensive end. Dylan Donahue (50G, 21A) returns at attack, but with Kevin Rice and Randy Staats having moved on to the pro ranks, he’ll own the entirety of the defensive attention until additional scoring threats begin to emerge. Jordan Evans has been especially productive at his natural attack position during preseason scrimmages, and Brown transfer Nick Piroli looks to have the edge on the third spot in the rotation.

Though not quite as unrecognizable as the Orange lineup, Siena’s roster has holes of its own that must be addressed in order to improve upon last year’s 5-9 record. For starters, the Saints will need to replace their top three scorers from last season (their top returning midfielder recorded eight points in 2015) and their most experienced face-off specialist, sophomore Hunter Sanna, has only 11 attempts on his resume.

Ben Williams should have a monster game. He dominated there all American FOGO last year and his replacement is clearly as green as it gets.
