Best win in the past 10 years?

Top 40 Ws in last 12 years by Sagarin:

14. VT (thus far)
22. WV 2011
27. Louisville 2012
36. WV 2010
40. Toledo 2011
40. Missouri 2012

The fact that we only have six Top 40 Ws in 12 years is sad. If VT finishes the season as expected, they will be the best team we beat during that stretch. Of those games I think the WV win in 2010 was the most important as that gave us confidence to get to a Bowl that year. The 2011 Ws weren't as big a deal since we didn't make a Bowl. The 2012 wins were nice but we still make a Bowl if we only win one. If we make a Bowl this year then I would say the VT win was the best win in terms of importance and quality.

In looking up the stats for Marrone's first two years to compare to Babers, I stumbled up on some historical context that was interesting. If you use Football Outsiders S&P+ rating (I know some don't like this, feel free to sub your favorite rankings) the VaTech win is the best we've had in 10 years by quite a bit.

In year one? Dino Freaking Babers.

2006-2008/GERG: Not looking at those years
2009/Marrone: Rutgers, #76
2010/Marrone: WVU, #31 / KSTATE, #55
2011/Marrone: WVU, #29
2012/Marrone: Louisville, #57 / WVU, #42
2013/Shafer: BC, #51
2014/Shafer: Central Michigan, #89
2015/Shafer: BC, #67
2016/Babers: VaTech, #13

What's with putting those two in opposition? Talk about a stupid waste of time.

Baber's has also picked up a better situation.

SU four years prior to Marrone, 10-37, since you think the S&P rating is so great, 96, 55, 90, 88 four years prior, average of 82, 2009 - 62.

SU four year prior to Babers, 22-28, 40, 59, 78, 71 average of 62, current year 65

The program was on much better footing this year to start with, and is significantly improved already. Great job by him.

Same thing can be said of Marrone. The team was better after their first year than when they took the job. That's all you can ask for.

If you use 3 years prior it is an average of 78th vs 69th, which isn't all that different.

It was in response to another post in another thread.

I was curious. You're adding meaning I never intended.

To speak to what they inherited, Babers also inherited a much, much harder conference slate to go with our typically tough OOC. But Marrone had less money for staff and didn't have an IPF.

It's really hard to compare - but history is measured by comparisons. Some of the best sports discussions are in the comparing of things. If you don't want to participate, be my guest.
